Here are some solid updates from last we wrote:
Games: Our Game Masters have been busy planning a variety of fun and engaging games for attendees of all ages! Want to bring your family along for a little vacation? Great! We even have games planned for the little ones to help engage everyone in the spirit of Mobile!
Mobile App: We have already started putting our mobile app together! This year we are using SwapCard. Stay tuned and/or visit our website for more information about how to use the app!
Sessions: Paper acceptances have gone out (obviously!) and deadlines are starting to march by. The SESUG authors are busy doing the final touches to their papers and presentations. From what we are seeing, there is going to be some GREAT CONTENT instore for you!
Grants: Our grant winners have been notified and are planning their trips. All awardees this year are also presenters, so please don’t miss their presentations!
Monday Night Event: The ship has been booked, the food has been ordered, and entertainment has been planned. Get ready for a fun night of networking with one of Mobile’s most decorated celebrities – the USS Alabama!
SAS Coding Event: If you have been to our website, you might have noticed the cryptic “SAS Coding Event” under the events tab. Are you curious? We are busy putting the final touches on this exciting new networking opportunity and hope you are ready for a fun hands-on data experience with a local impact!
Those are the big updates for now. There are so many other balls in the air that we are working through each day, but the above are the fun ones that we can report! Aside from these, we have been busy designing and ordering Thank You cards, ribbons, volunteer and committee gifts, signage, and decorations; updating the website as dates/times and events are confirmed; and working with our hotel on the finishing touches.
Speaking of the hotel, we are on our third point-of-contact with the hotel, which is requiring a significant amount of confirmations and back-tracking to make sure that the event goes off without a hitch. This is probably the biggest obstacle at this current stage, but one we are greeting with focus and determination.
We look forward to “seeing” you again at our next update! In the meantime, please make sure you check out the website, register for the conference, and book your hotel room before it is too late!

As can be expected, the last few weeks have been a whirlwind. My Operations update (this one) has been a bit delayed due to some much needed time off so my little guy can enjoy the company of family for the first time since his January 2020 entry into this world. That’s right! The little dude pictured here (yes, in a planning call with Chris H!) is literally as old as the US COVID pandemic!

Site Visit. The executive committee held our Site Visit and Winter Meeting during the week of March 8 th (before March 20th, so it was still Winter!). It was the week after Mardi Gras, so the beads were still in the trees and our contacts were happy to talk about the festivities! A total of 6 from our 11 member team were able to travel to the Mobile site. The remaining 5 of us stayed home for various reasons and called in to the full EC meetings on Friday and Saturday. During the site visit, we were able to talk with representatives of a number of local sites, our charity (Mobile Baykeeper), the venue and caterer for our Monday Night Event, our keynote speaker, and our hotel. It was a very productive visit and we are still working through all of our notes and action items!
Registration. Registration is being tested! Our Registrar has set up the system and we are currently in our second round of testing. Registration will open on April 23 rd , so look out for the announcement and check the website!
Social Media. This year, our social media team is going to be integral to pushing out announcements and information about the different features and dates related to the conference. I encourage you to follow our individual accounts (in addition to this blog!) to make sure you are getting any announcements and updates hot off the press.

Monday Night Event. Our venue, caterer, and transportation have all been chosen! Now we are just down to deposits and contracts.
Volunteer & Games. Our volunteer coordinators and Game Masters had their first meeting last week! The line-up for volunteering and networking activities looks very engaging and fun, so if you have any interest in getting involved, please reach out to volunteers@sesug.org!
Mobile App. During the Winter Meeting we discussed many possibilities for a mobile app platform. Over the last few weeks we have reached out to several companies and toured/demoed multiple apps. We want to make sure we select the best one for our attendees that would maximize both the educational and networking aspects of our conference. We have a lot of great options and offers, now we just need to narrow it down to our favorite.
Trainings. Our tutorial instructors have been chosen and are featured on our website! There is a wide range of trainings this year from excellent instructors. Please check them out here!
Saturday Events. The trainers have been chosen for our “Getting Started With SAS” and Python/R Day events. We are currently working on updating our website with our instructor bios and event details, so keep checking back to learn more!
Charity. Our featured charity this year is Mobile Baykeeper. Mobile Baykeeper is a broad organization with a vested interest in the health and wellbeing of the Mobile Bay Watershed and Coastal Alabama. Throughout the year, this team works tirelessly to clean up, monitor, conduct research, and educate the surrounding community to ensure the Mobile area maintains its richness for years to come. This year, we want to show additional support for our charity by making more environmentally conscious decisions about how we run our conference. This includes accessibility of recycle bins, compostable dinnerware, limited printed papers/handouts (increased utilization of our virtual formats), and many more. We want to be our charity’s partner as well as a promoter! To learn more about the Mobile Baykeeper mission, please visit their website. To donate, please visit our fundraising page!
HOW & BYOD. For Hands-On Workshops this year, we will be doing a Bring Your Own Device format! We are currently working on getting the instructions together for posting on our website, so stay tuned for more information. We will be providing instructions for access to software through AWS as well as SODA (SAS On Demand for Academics) in order to meet the demand an comfort of our individual presenters and attendees.
There is so much more going on than can be summarized in a brief blog post, but I hope this gives you some insight into how far we have come in our planning over the past month. Thank you all for your support!

February has brought new and unique challenges to DeDe and Barbara as the planning of SESUG 2022 continues. The Omicron variant is starting to subside, bringing hope to committee members and conference attendees, alike, that we will finally be able to meet again after being apart for over 2 years. The shared knowledge, comradery, and (let's be honest, here) humor/woes of our community are best felt when interacting in person, something very few of us have been able to do since the change from 2019 to 2020. Though February may have shown us that there may, indeed, be a light at the end of the tunnel, that light still illuminated the many obstacles that lie between where we are now, and where we need to be.
February - Is it really almost over?
In the past, SESUG Executive Committee members usually have a site visit the Summer of the year before the conference and a Winter Meeting around January of the conference year. Given the Delta variant in the Summer, the site visit was pushed into the January Winter Meeting. Then given the surge in Omicron, this site visit + Winter Meeting was postponed to mid-March (given that Mobile is where the first Mardi Gras in America took place, we definitely couldn't schedule it during their party month!). When the postponement first occurred, we were only planning on having maybe one absent member of our 11 member team. Unfortunately, given developments in the personal lives of several of our team members (including the fact that children under age 5 still do not have a COVID vaccine -> which affects your beloved Operations Chair), only six of our team members are able to make the trek to Mobile in a couple of weeks. This means these members will need to cover more ground than usual, while the remaining four of us (another member will be out of the country) will endure full-day meetings at home, in front of our computers....with our families and household expectations wait patiently to greet us the second we are done (this is not said in malice, we love our families!).
Over the Fall and Winter of 2021, Barbara and I worked hard to get a head start on as much material for the conference as possible. It really seemed like we were getting ahead of the curve. Before SESUG 2021 had even happened, Barbara and I had created drafts of most of the materials, budget items, timelines, schedules, and website features that we could. We wanted to hit the ground running and keep the pace. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on whether you are a glass half empty or half-full kind of person) my son's transition into the "terrible-twos" and my husband's simultaneous transition in job / work environments created substantial delays in my ability to work effectively.....in any regard. Being so far away from family (>10 hours at minimum) meant that the pressure of my many hats needed to be worn without reprieve. As anyone who has ever done research on multi-tasking will tell you, this does not for an effective work environment make (<- you read that right, my brain just stopped processing things correctly). I will spare you the tear-stained details, but will leave you with this - what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger...at least theoretically :).
Picture of my favorite distraction / travel - restriction:
Mobile App Woes
Another interesting development of the past month, is our newfound need to hunt for a new mobile app. Before COVID came in to our lives, many Regional User Groups used Attendify as the mobile app platform of choice. Unfortunately, Attendify was one of the companies consumed over the 2-year break (bought out by Hopin). While talks with Hopin were promising at first, we quickly learned that the acquisition of Attendify would result in the application no longer being available, and being replaced with Hopin's own mobile app. After a brief review of Hopin's features, we quickly decided to go in another direction. We reached out to colleagues, friends, and family members for ideas, explored the options, and are relatively sure we have settled on a comparable mobile app platform that will be comfortable for everyone to use. Further updates will be provided in later posts, once we have finalized our decisions, but for now, we can saw that we are optimistic.
Keep your eyes on the prize -> being together!
Our individual conference committee teams have continued working hard to make sure that content is up and ready for hungry community members to start planning their trips out to Mobile, AL. In fact, Call for Papers will open shortly after this post is published! We look forward to seeing what everyone has been working on since we have been apart!
Our creativity has been in overdrive as we negotiate and integrate a new and unique line-up of events into the SESUG event menu. Get ready for games, networking opportunities, open-source exploration, and more interactive presentations.
I hope you are ready for Mardi Gras and Boats! The conference team will be posting lots of Mardi Gras and River Boat themed pictures on Social Media. We invite everyone to join in on the fun! Mardi Gras is March 1st, so I hope you are ready :).
We are continuing to work with SAS to ensure their valuable support and presence at SESUG 2022. We will continue to update as plans become more solidified. We are also working with a variety of potential sponsors so that we can provide even greater value to our attendees. We will continue to share our progress and hope all of you will be along for the ride.

As a conference chair for SESUG 2022, I am equally concerned. SAS support through speakers/presentations and presence at the conference is very important to our attendees. It is beneficial for everyone to have that face-to-face interaction. We had a harmonious existence in years past by providing these opportunities throughout the year (SASGF in Spring, Regionals in Fall). This threatens this balance by either forcing RUGs to consider moving dates to the Spring (drastic moves like this have been deliberately avoided due to several logistical reasons - in obvious addition to the desire to maintain harmony) or needlessly saturating a time of year with decisions on professional development that directly abut and overlap the established routine of fiscal and domestic demands that impact the decisions of organizations and individual employees every year. In addition to this, we have no real idea of what a post-COVID conference world will look like. Those of us running the regional conferences this year and next have already been trying to build and share our knowledge and insight so as to create the best experience for our collective community. This decision by SAS event planning - while simultaneously excluding the RUGs, LUGs, and IHUGs that support the development of SAS's end users - serves as a huge red flag that SAS event planning has insight or information that they have neglected to share with community organizers for the benefit of the community on the whole. Instead of collaborating with us to ensure the best 2022 experience for our community, we were slapped with a lack-luster update via post on this forum that has significant potential to impact our ability to best serve our community. It is too late to reschedule our conferences to the Spring to maintain harmony, so we are left to wonder what other surprises SAS has for us, and how to plan for them. It definitely feels like this was either an oversight by SAS, or deliberate. It goes against our established relationship for years. I hope that since this move has had significant internal planning and support, that insight will be shared with the RUGs as well? We still want to create the best experience for our users, it is the most important thing to us. What is SAS's vision for our community moving forward?

Paper 1061-2021
Author
Deanna Schreiber-Gregory, Juxdapoze, LLC
Abstract
Data science is the new space race, launching us into a world of immeasurable possibility, but with only a few people to help us navigate it. As we dig deeper, discover more and risk more, we can be simultaneously led to both great insight and loss. If we do not know what we are doing, data science can be a very dangerous thing. It is important for us all to learn at least a little bit about the possibilities and risks of this field of study so we can navigate it together. This discussion will benefit those who are new to SAS and/or analytics, making them aware of the possibilities when using data science and SAS. Learn how to navigate through the process of data exploration by using publicly available COVID-19 data. Reporting on this data can be very fragile, so we will explain the dangers of an inappropriately implemented analytical process. Together, we will briefly touch on current best practices and common errors that occur at the different steps of the analytical process, while simultaneously reviewing common SAS procedures used in each of these steps. At the end of this presentation, learn about several citations and recommended readings that can help further your education in data science implementation.
See attached for all the details.

Exciting news! SAS Global Forum will be virtual in 2021 and we are already lining up the content for broadcast in late April or May 2021. The virtual SAS Global Forum Conference in June 2020 had over 40,0000 views since it opened and volunteers from all around the world donated their time throughout last year, to help organize, manage, contribute and evaluate the content to ensure attendees had the best experience possible. Since SAS Global Forum is virtual for 2021, we are still in need of people like you, who are willing to donate some of your time to help make the event successful. If you would be interested in contributing your time, we’d like to ask you to complete the Engagement Opportunity form indicating your knowledge areas and interest. Please read the role descriptions carefully as some are specific to how the conference is attended (virtual only, on-site only, and both) and may not be available for the current year’s conference team. However, if the role is not available for the current year, you should feel free to indicate your interest so the information can be shared with the next conference team where the role is applicable. Once completed, as opportunities arise, the conference team will reach out to you. Note that some roles may have all responsibilities done remotely which applies to both virtual and on-site conferences. Roles that are have responsibilities that specifically on-site only pertain to conferences that have an in-person component. Thus, some roles may have a mix of remote and on-site duties. We are looking for all who want to become more engaged with SAS Global Forum, so be sure to complete the form and feel free to share to your colleagues. As the conference approaches, the conference leadership team will reach out to you based on your interest. Some roles do not require volunteers immediately while others have may have already passed. However, if a role has passed and you would still like to be considered for it in the future be sure to mark it as a role of interest. https://github.com/sgug/Engagement-Opportunities/tree/main/SAS-Global-Forum-2021 Thank you Engagement Coordinator sasglobalforum.com #SASGF

Greetings SAS Community! I think I know the answer to this question, but I am sincerely hoping I am wrong. I am creating plots for my ridge traces and variance inflation factors using Proc Reg. However, the output needs to be in grayscale for printing. Therefore, I need to change the symbols on the lines associated with the different variables. Is this possible? If so, how do I do it? PS: I am using SAS 9.4 I am using a SAS sample dataset. Here is my code: /* Example of Multicollinearity Findings */ libname health "C:\Program Files\SASHome\SASEnterpriseGuide\7.1\Sample\Data"; data health; set health.lipid; run; /* Assess Pairwise Correlations of Continuous Variables */ proc corr data=health; var age weight cholesterol triglycerides hdl ldl height; title 'Health Predictors - Examination of Correlation Matrix'; run; proc reg data=health; model cholesterolloss = age weight cholesterol triglycerides hdl ldl height / vif tol collin; title 'Health Predictors - Multicollinearity Investigation of VIF and Tol'; run; /* Ridge Regression Example */ proc reg data=health outvif plots(only)=ridge(unpack VIFaxis=log) outest=rrhealth ridge=0 to 0.10 by .002; model cholesterolloss = age weight cholesterol triglycerides hdl ldl height; plot / ridgeplot nomodel nostat; title 'Health - Ridge Regression Calculation'; run; Any help/guidance is sincerely appreciated!!
