I gave a presentation on Stored Processes back in 1989 in Johannesburg, to SUGISA (SAS Users Group In South Africa). Back when we had slow processors, compiling the code of a large datastep took longer than processing the data. In my case I reduced a monthly report run from 40 minutes to just 2 using the above. This was one datastep of over 3000 lines churning through two datasets of over 500 variables each - a legacy of using FSEdit on the mainframe and slow response times (remember those?). I never even thought that this knowledge would ever be used again, but it seems that is now not the case. Anyone else have any tales from the past to share?

"Can someone give me suggestions here to getting started?" Not without knowing more about what your goals are. What specifically are you trying to achieve? What/where are your data sources? Are they corporate ones? Are they in a datawarehouse? What type of analyses are you trying to perform, using what statistical methods? What products are you currently using? To address one of your questions, EG is the preferred interface to SAS, and it comes with each PC licence of base SAS 9. However, it is still the case that a power SAS user must also be a programmer and it will be a few releases yet before EG makes enough of the underlying power of SAS available as point and click for programming not to be essential.

The Learning Edition is a fairly inexpensive ~ $100. introduction to SAS and besides Base, includes portions of SAS/Stat, SAS/ETS, SAS/QC and SAS/Graph. (I sound like a sales person ;->) Three important caveats: 1) you are limited to 10,000 observations for any dataset you create 2) the LE is intended for self-study, non-commercial purposes and 3) the version of E.G. included w. LE is 2.0 - this is pretty far removed from 3.0.2. and the recently announced 4.1 . An excellent resource for all things SAS is SAS-L on the Internet. Do a Google search, see how you can join and then stand back .. Just my $0.02 . Bernie Zimmerman

Along the same lines (somewhat), does EG 4.1 allow you to STOP the process flow should one of your code nodes fail. If an earlier step fails, can you prevent the rest of the process flow from running? Message was edited by: rup45 at Apr 5, 2006 1:27 PM

I have a large number of HTML tags and because of that it takes a long tim to load. I have tried to use the answer in FAQ (3628) and it worked out. But ! - the problem is that I want the message to show only when the first page i loaded. Every time I start another report the message appeared. I include parts of my program below. Dan, Thanks for the rapid response. Unfortunately, running your code on my SAS SP3 fails to show the "Main Title" and centers the date above the body table. DO I have to wait for SP4+ or is there a way with SP3? Thanks, Dwight

Thanks all for input here. Especial interest: "In SAS 9.2, PROC SORT will have options to validate the sort order of a data set and set a sort assertion if the data set is sorted. " Will look forward to more on that. As it turned out, the exercise didn't take as long as I had feared, and I ran through the entire 600 files in around 2 hours, using the proc copy noclone method. I used the output of proc contents to determine if the file needed compression. Eventual space saving of around (a very significant) 15%.

Well, maybe. The RTF created by SAS can honor the SAS Option options pageno=50 ; This will start the page numbering at 50. You cna also reset it. It does this by using the RTF specs \pgnrestart\pgnstarts50 in the section data. The 50 comes from the SAS option. You want to do the page numbering on the footnote, so you are probably cutting them off in the header body. Using option nonumber; won't prevent the reset. There is an undocumented and lightly tested (non production) feature in 9.1 that allows section data to be appended at new section breaks, for instance, ODS RTF sectiondata="\sbknone" ; It is not parsed so any use of it is not formally supported.
