@Nietzsche - I just tried copying code from SAS Studio 3.81 to Word and that doesn't retain formatting, however Enterprise Guide definitely does. It is possible a later version of Studio fixes that but I don't have any access to those currently.

WHERE is applied to the input dataset(s). It can only work with variables present there. Observations filtered by it never make it into the data step iteration. The subsetting IF does not filter observations, it prevents part of the data step code from being executed (all observations make it into a data step iteration), and it works with all variables present in the PDV.

In the simple example you have, OUTPUT really has no impact, but in other cases OUTPUT could be useful. Example: data cars2 (drop=color); set spg.cars; if color='G'; /* perform some complicated calculation that takes 10 steps and generates a value in variable RESULT */ if result<0 then output; run;

Modify your PROC FREQ code like this: proc freq data=cody.taxes; format Question_1 $answer.; tables Question_1/out=a; run; Next, look at data set A. Then look at data set A where you have removed the format from variable QUESTION_1, you will see that the category assigned to the 9 and missing is listed as missing, despite the fact that some of the values have a non-missing value of 9. By default PROC FREQ does not tabulate frequencies for the missing level. Re-run the code using the MISSING option, then see what happens.

They start with the FIRST. or LAST. components, followed by an optional "<expression>" and then a semi-colon. This syntax suggests that one can create a valid SAS statement of that form. Really?

Hi: You are correct, the example in the Prep Guide assumes a Windows local install of SAS, where all of the related HTML files are opened from a write-access location on the user's C: drive. When you are running on a server system, such as SAS OnDemand for Academics, the code may not work to build HTML frames in a way that you can open the frame file when downloaded. As an example, when I use the code in the Prep Guide on the SAS OnDemand server, I get this (looking at the HTML file as plain text to see the generated HTML): As you can see, the Linux path for my /home folder is written into the src=option of the HTML code. So when I download the FRAME file to my local Windows system, I don't have a /home folder on my Windows system, so the FRAME file will open, but will be unable to load the 2 files that are linked to it. I'll show you a way below to work around this, if/when you really need to. However, I believe this is a moot point, because if you check the CONTENT guide for the certification exam, you'll find that this topic is not on the list. I believe it was taken off the exam in the last revision because of the variability of using HTML frames on different operating systems. Here's the link to the content guide: https://www.sas.com/content/dam/SAS/documents/technical/certification/content-guide/specialist-base-programming.pdf and as you can see there's nothing as specific as using HTML frames. I'll open an errata item with the certification group about this topic. The fact about HTML frames is that their usage is nearly non-existent now. Most web masters are not using "vanilla" HTML controls for frame navigation these days, so in actual practice, you would give the HTML report files to the web team or write the HTML files to a shared location and they would control the frame-type navigation using other web site technology such as XML, ASP, or PHP, instead of HTML frames. Cynthia PS...One of the issues with the code, as written in the book, is that they needed to use slightly different syntax, as shown in the screen shot below: You can see that when all 3 files are downloaded to my Downloads folder on Windows, then I can open the FRAME= file by just double clicking on the ssframe.html file (my name for the file) and everything displays correctly: The reason this works is that using the (URL=NONE) suboption causes the src=option to NOT hold any of the path from the Linux system. But again, I think this example in the book needs to be updated or removed entirely and I will bring the issue up to the editors. Cynthia

Hi: On many operating systems, the default location for saving ODS output is a write access folder or directly location that is available without specifying the entire path. In your example, it appears that you were writing to a SAS OnDemand or BI Lev1 server folder, which is a shared server and that /pbr/config location that is prepended to your file name is a default server folder to which your session does not have write privileges. Using the "full control" method of specifying the path and the filename/file extension is the best way to avoid the insufficient authorization error when you're working on a server. The example in the book was using a shortcut by not specifying the PDF file extension. Although this can work, it may cause you to get prompted for what application is needed to open the file when you double click on the file name. I prefer to always use the full path and file name/file extension to avoid confusion. What they show in the book will work, but not in all various configurations of using SAS (local, client-server, etc) as you discovered, but the full control method will always work. It's useful to know both methods and know that you can adapt your code or modify legacy code appropriately for how and where the code is being run. Cynthia

You can change that behavior by overriding the Style setting: data example; length x $10; x='ABC';output; x=' ABC';output; run; proc print noobs data=example; var x; title 'Default ods behavior'; run; title; proc Print noobs data=example style(data)=[asis=on] ; var x; title "Style ASIS=on"; run;title; Not all procedures have nice ways to override this behavior and may have to send to output to data sets and use Proc Print, Report or Tabulate to display the data set where you can provide the override.
