I would like to install SAS 9.4 with the mid-tier under some virtual machine software on my Mac. I have plenty of disk space, memory and a fast machine - so it should work. I'm wondering if anyone has done this on a Mac? I asked SAS Tech Support and they had no advice. Ideally I would like to be able to develop stored processes and other SAS software on my Mac, having the servers running in the VM in the background. Any advice would be very welcome. thanks Phil

I just found this post, and invented a similar system for making data flow diagrams. I'd be interested to know if you found a solution to your problem of how the %include seemed to be excluded from Proc SCAPROC. You should try to contact Eric Thies (I thinkt that's his name) as he is the guy who made this PROC and could best comment on it. - Phil

Morning all, we had a manager say that the SAS Add-in was used a lot and I have been trying to quantify that. When someone uses the SAS Add-in (from Excel or Word) it spawns a SAS Workspace Server session, so it is possible to go and find the log for that and see what they did. In the same way Enterprise Guide spawns a Workspace Server session too. I am trying to identify what started the session from the log. Comparing two logs side by side I couldn’t see anything that I could use to do that. Has anyone done this? Or know of a way to do it? I suppose I could change the way they are spawned and add a macro variable to pass in to use, but that involves messing around with configurations. Any advice would be appreciated. thanks Phil

I have a complex application that uses SAS stored processes called using Ajax. If the stored process works properly then we will stream a JSON message to the browser which we can pick up and determine whether the function of the stored process was a success or failure, as well as other information included in the JSON message. However if the stored process has an error, then we get a bunch of HTML streamed back along with the "show SAS log" button etc. I would like to override what the stored process web application is doing here and I would rather it just returned a JSON message saying that it had failed or something similar. Is there a way to override this? I'd appreciate any ideas/suggestions/answers. thanks, Phil Mason p.s. We are using SAS 9.1.3 SP4 with Tomcat on a Windows server.

I am trying to replace a complex EXCEL report by producing the report using ODS PDF. We are using SAS 9.1.3 which means we have less functionality available than in SAS 9.2. The report I am trying to make has a range of tables & graphs in different positions on the page. I have worked out how to do quite a lot using ODS Layout, but I have some problems. (1) Is there a way to control the individual borders for a cell? For example, I would like most of the borders on in one table, but the top left cell I want its top & left borders off. (2) Is there a way to merge cells? In EXCEL I can make a table and then perhaps merge 2 of the cells - this is what I want to do. (3) Is there a way to fit text to a cell of fixed size? Another thing that can be done in EXCEL that I would like to reproduce so that when a cell has very long text it will still fit. I had also tried using ODS data step objects, but these are a bit limited in 9.1.3 too. I would really appreciate some help or to know whether this is just not possible in 9.1.3. If we can do this in SAS with ODS then we think we can speed up transactions in a web application which produces output in EXCEL using vbScript. thanks Phil Mason

Thanks guys - once again the first thing you suggest turns out to be the solution. I was doing a SQL join with some other data on the map dataset, so that I could use a where and cut down the map data being used. This SQL join changed the sequence and messed things up. I just created a variable called obs which I set to _n_ in a data step, so I could remember the sequence of points - then I put an order by obs on my SQL join and it all worked. Thanks!

I used SAS 9.2 to import the shape files, as Darrell suggested, which worked for all of the higher levels of geography. I then got a shape file for a lower level and went through the same process and now find that I have a crazy looking shape. Looking at the coordinates it is a bit like it draws lines up and down like a heart monitor and then finally connects the last dot to the first one. This produces a series of triangles since all the ups and downs are bisected by the line back to the first coordinate. Is this likely to be bad shape data? Or is there something else I should do as I use Proc Mapimport to sort this problem out?

(You too Rob :>) I took my shape files along to SAS 9.2 and imported them whilst also specifying the id I wanted, then took the coordinates back to 9.1.3 and suddenly everything worked. This is great since I am doing this for the UK government's Census Management Information System that I am building. I'll tell the deputy directors that you helped. Thanks, Phil

I have imported mapping data for the UK from ESRI shape files using Proc MapImport, which worked very well. I then ran the mapping data through Proc Greduce to get a density variable for quicker mapping - which also worked well. I then use Proc Gmap with the choro statement to produce my map along with tooltips hovering over areas and the ability to click and drill down for lower level maps. This all mostly works, but my problem is that some of the areas in my map seem to be undefined or have errors. I can hover over most areas and get a tooltip, and the pointer turns to a finger indicating I can drill down. However when I hover over just a few areas on the map the pointer does not change, I get no tooltip and cant click to drill down. I am using IE6, although I did just try this in Chrome and the problem is still there. Has anyone seen this behavior before and does anyone have any idea how to fix or get a workaround? This is done on AIX, SAS 9.1.3. thanks Phil Mason

I wonder if there is a way to call a VBA macro when producing some RTF. It is pretty easy to make a VBA macro in word to add a watermark. Can we tell ODS/RTF to call this macro somehow? I know we can do it from windows by opening word with DDE, loading the RTF and calling the macro - but is there another way?

this was a simplified example to show the problem but did not explain why we need to use it. We do need to use quoting in this way. We did work out we could use %unquote to fix the problem, but we didnt understand why and so raised it here in hope of getting an explanation from someone in the know. Thanks to all that have responded so far though.

You're right. It's like it has used a format and right justified the argument to %str, so it puts some spaces in front of it. That then explains what you find and the error. I look forward to hearing what the experts at SAS make of this.

Sorry - I had tried a few different PROCs and the last one was a Proc Sort so I hadnt fixed the syntax. However, I still get the error with correct syntax.... 21 proc print data=test&x ; run ; _ 200 ERROR 200-322: The symbol is not recognized and will be ignored.
