If possible, tell the guys who create the file that they should double double quotes (sic) in text fields, like in "Mays, Kay or Mays, Hank ""Ch". Regards, Søren

No problem. The key is to recognize that it is a datetime value, not a date, so you need to extract the date from it and then just use the literal in your expression.

You need to specify that your array is character with a "$" You also will probably want to assign some appropriate length to the variables you created or you might see truncation.

@ballardw awww, now he won't post a next question since you've warned him 🙂 @GreggB Proc Import is a guessing procedure, but it doesn't guess accurately all the time. So if you import all the Excel files, it's 99% guaranteed that certain variables will be numeric in one file and character in another. This becomes an issue when you try and combine the datasets which is usually the next logical step in this process. So you'll end up either processing every file to make sure it meets the specifications at some point or converting all to CSV and reading accordingly. The SAS provided VB script here can be modified to convert all your xls to csv files automatically. http://support.sas.com/kb/43/496.html

thank you greggB, the thing is I have almost 10 thousands observations for the 'words', and many of them have some typos. for example, the word 'cat' may be typed as 'catt' and I still want them to be treated as the same, should I include 'like' operator somewhere?

My "xlsx" was intended to be the libname. I experimented with several libnames with the same result. No errors in the log, it appears to work fine, but the resulting Excel file will not open when using the pcfiles code. When I use the xlsx method, it also appears to work, but again I get unreadable content in the excel file. The message here is "Excel found unreadable content in <filename>. Do you want to recover the contents of this workbook?" If I click yes, it opens, but with unreadable content. If I try to use the method that worked fine in 9.3 (just using a libname statement without an "xlsx" or "pcfiles") it gives me a SAS error: ERROR: Connect: Class not registered ERROR: Error in the LIBNAME statement. I think I'm going to have to find a different method here. Could the issue be 64-bit SAS vs. 32-bit Office?

In this case you only needed a sort on one variable. If you ever need to sort by two variables, see the article "How to order categories in a two-way table with PROC FREQ."
