I guess that this is one of the cases where SQl can do things that the data step can't, since we could do the merge on id alone, but a subsequent subsetting if with the further conditions would prevent the output of an "a" record if there were only matching "b" IDs that don't fulfil the additional conditions.

Formats only control the display of the variable. If you need to change the format, use a format statement. This keeps your variable as a date so that you can do calculations later on, such as duration. format variable yymmdd10.; Otherwise, if you want a character variable use PUT() function as demonstrated in the other answer.

You can use the OFFSETMIN and OFFSETMAX options to move the end tick marks further from the edge of the wall. Hope this helps! Dan

I consider it very dangerous to add a record in this fashion as further analysis should exclude that "average" line value. If this is for a report the Proc Report will do a summary at the end the change of a variable and insert the summary average.

@RW9: At first glance I also thought this would be just the ordinary way to impute the year-only case, but wondered why Reeza would like it then. A second look revealed that the YYMMDD10. informat used with the INPUT function reads only the first 10 characters of the concatenated string, hence ignores the potential 11th, 12th, ... characters if the original character date had length >4. Finally, I checked that even informat YYMMDD16. is tolerant enough to extract the correct date from values such as '2010-12-15-01-01' or '2010-05-01-01'.
