Btw, proc product_status output had nothing about SAS/STATS.

I just had the same problem. Was trying to import with a very simple proc import, csv. Got an error but no information. Had done this a million times before and couldn't figure out the problem. Finally I closed down SAS and re-opened it and it worked. Go figure.

Hello,
I have this option set to view column names. If I open a data by navigating there with SAS explorer using a shortcut to the actual directory, and click on it, I see the labels in VIEWTABLE. If I navigate to the same directory using the SAS library, I see the variable names. Very weird. Can it be changed so that I can see the variable names at all times?
Thanks.

Thank you for your elaborate response.
In the 2nd example, we're getting erroneous (made up) dates, when the date isn't specified so that's a case where we'd need to make sure we're only getting the time part.
What I've been doing forever is reading all questionable source data as character and dealing with it in SAS, as opposed to trying to manage an import process that could contain weird values. I still believe that this is the way to go. I want to see what's actually in there, regardless of Excel formatting.
This does help me understand the process though.
Thanks again.

I would import them as character then deal with them in SAS. You can check the values and convert them depending on the source value. For instance you can check if the first character is numeric then create a date using the first value* as the year, and the second** as the month in the MDY function. Conversely if the first character is a letter, use the first value as the month and the second as the year in the same function. You'd have to supply a value for the day as mentioned in the previous answer.
* scan(date, 1, '-');
** scan(date, 2, '-');

Oh, no it doesn't get rid of the leading blanks, so ya, that would work too. Thanks.

WARNING: using the NOLABEL option means that the variables in your datasets will have no labels!!! Remember to set the option back to LABEL afterwards. I just lost a lot of time discovering this.

Use the round() function to discard the small fractional values. These tiny values are artifacts of the way SAS stores and computes numerical values.

The data is ok, in fact, I don't even use that column. I just don't want the message. Could I delete that one variable at source, in the set statement? How? With the Excel column name?
set specns."Sheetname$"n ;

Well as I noted above, if the filename hasn't changed then you must have moved that file to another location. You cannot have two files with exactly the same path/filename - hence some of the information on that has changed. This is likely why.
Simply put Excel is possibly the worst medium you can use for data transfer, I cannot stress to you how bad it is. Use any proper data transfer format and your life will be so much easier - CSV, XML, dataset, delimted etc. I know, your response is going to be, but we "have" to use Excel, generally I hate that word have to. Even then however you could save the data to Excel - write a macro to do it if you have to, just get away from the horribly unstructured/uncontrolled environment.
