Would an import proc create a SAS dataset to eventually export to a CSV file, can this be accomplished without creating a SAS dataset?

Hello folks, I request your help in providing me with a reusable SAS code in converting an external file, an xls file to a Comma Separated file. The complexity is that I have over 80 odd xls files that needs to be transformed to a CSV file. Can this be efficiently achieved in using datastep/proc logic? Secondly, if you do have a solution for the above, can that be replicated for use in other transformations, say for example xls to tab and other kinds of delimited files such as tab by making small changes. Any example would be wonderful for my clear understanding. I'd sincerely appreciate this priceless help. Many Thanks, Charlotte from England

For example: What is the probability of me selecting Tea – with sugar – with milk. What is the formula? 0.5 x 0.5 x 0.5

Hi Folks, In a typical SAS EBI platform environment, I have often experienced and come across practices that would involve reports that is generated using a 'stored process' viewable using information delivery portal by business users whomsoever. I understand the same is accomplished by registering the stored process in the metadata server with a metadata definition. However, in my current requirement I have a need to create a Java user interface to the report layer and that will most certainly not have a connection established to the SAS metadata. I'd appreciate if any of you can guide me by letting me know how to make a stored process report executed from a link viewable on a java portal. I hope my question makes sense as the Java user interface layer wouldn't have SAS Connect establishment with the metadata server. Your earnest response would mean a lot to me. Thanks, Charlotte

Hi, Thank you so much for finding it interesting ,acknowledging and participating in this discussion, and I sincerely appreciate that. I'm so glad and thankful to each one of you in taking the time to think through and voice an opinion. Well, I guess i mustn't say just "Opinion", those are indeed coming from your great experiences and expert knowledge. I have taken some excerpts that makes complete sense from all the above that uses wonderful metaphors and analogies starting from PG comparing the finance industry to automobile industry. PG Sir, What about Driver-less Car for Google and Tesla motors, California- no need for us to Drive anymore? Sounds fun, right. Secondly, very well explained by Richard, visioning the Pharmaceutical company scenario-hey I love this-"my doctor understands (some of)"hahaha. Well said, Only some of, I never really trusted a Doctor fully ever. And of course the neat explanation by Chris and John Bentley in getting to comprehend for a SAS Developer to fill in roles of working on much more challenging tasks as opposed to sticking to merely basic programming/development stuff. This really means our team excluding me(still slow in learning) is a bunch of classics(super experts)- PG and Richard will write codes at super sonic speed, Xia Keshan is known to transform all that into Hash Objects, Jaap of course all trades- from Admin to Implementation and beyond, John our Technical Boss and Chris, our tech support consultant at SAS if need be. lol Nice idea eh? Chris, Just a quick question? Kudos to SAS for pumping in tons of money into R&D year after year from profits. I find that amazing for a privately held company to do so. Does that mean you guys at SAS are happy to keep the margins low. What next from R&D, got VA now, then perhaps SUPER VA with some further enhancements?What is that you are trying to accomplish with so much money pouring into R&D? Have a wonderful weekend Gentlemen. Hi Richard and Ksharp, Thanks for your responses. Yes, I totally agree. It was just a school of thought, however it could perhaps lead to at-least some level of downsizing right even if the plug and play game achieves only 40-50% on the objective. I can't estimate to what size the team could get smaller. Just makes me wonder though that, ruthless corporate unsympathetic minds always look for avenues to cut costs. HI SAS Community, I have been told that many large corporations tend to implement complete package solutions from SAS such as SAS Credit Risk Management, SAS marketing automation and so on. I have also been told that should package solutions be implemented in an organisation for a particular line of business, there wouldn't be a need for SAS Developers as the lifecycle of Data integration to Reporting and Analytics apparently gets fully automated. In that case, the need for SAS Developers would perhaps arise only when there is a requirement for extensive data customisation and beyond. If my above understanding is correct, is it possible to simply keep the ball rolling by merely just hiring a couple of Admin, and couple more SAS Implementation experts consequently downsizing the team eventually saving costs ? I'd appreciate if anyone can get my understanding clear and absolute. Thanks, Charlotte from England

Hi, I have a dataset with 43 variables. For example, var1-var43. In that about 28 are character and the remaining numeric. I want to identify those numeric variables and convert them to character. My need is I want an efficient SAS code in the use of put function or equivalent. Does it have to involve writing put function and storing in a new variable for each and every numeric variable?/* a tedius process or long lines*/ or is there anybody who can help me with a resuable super macro? Hey SAS Folks, I am in need of rather efficient logic perhaps using HASH Obj rather than typical joins for my problem. I have Dataset A and Dataset B with 100 and 80 variables respectively. I need to combine A and B with a left join with the following conditions: 1. variable1 of A= variable1 of B 2.variable2 of A=variable4 of B 3.variable5 of A= variable5 of B 4. pick only the last 20 variables from Dataset B Lets call the resultant datatset as AB Now, I need to left join AB dataset with Datatset C on conditions similar like the above and create the joined Dataset ABC. This process repeats and follows with ABC dataSET combining with Dataset D again on a left join to get the result ABCD with new join and filter conditions as mentioned above. So, Basically the dataset keeps growing if I have explained well enough!! If you notice, it's pretty easy to keep writing too many join queries that is highly I/O intensive and less efficient. I would appreciate a solution that I believe can be done using Hash Obj or perhaps in other methods that will be give me the most effective solutions coz each of my datatsets are like 20 million large record.
