Hi, I'm working with some code that produces the graph below and the program is ugly (proc template). I seem to recall something similar in a SAS presentation or Training email in the last few years but can't put my finger on it. Does anyone recognize this type of graph with differing size circles representing relative percentages? Is this a custom graph or is there a SAS Proc that can generate them (other than proc template)? Thanks! --Ben

Hi Cynthia, That looks like exactly what I was trying to do. We have a 4 page report heavy with graphs that has to be generated for about 20,000 clients. Picky layout, so an Absolute layout seemed appropriate. There will be text inserted in to the pages as well as graphs from SAS procs and external .png file (headers, etc.). Thinking this through a little more carefully, I think pre-generating the proc outputs (mostly graphs but a few tables) would be the most efficient approach. Put them in a document store and pull them out with a RWI data step? How does one retrieve a given image/table from a document store in the RWI? Target output will be a pdf file, and that's another issue, since the pdf filename can't be created dynamically that I know of. Wish there was a filevar option for ODS PDF output. Open to suggestions on approaches on this task. Will read the paper in the morning after coffee. Thanks! --Ben

Hi, Is it possible to mix data step RWI and proc outputs going to the same ODS destination? I'm using the absolute method in a data step RWI but want to populate some of the regions with proc-produced graphics. The structure of the RWI in the data step suggests 'no' since the entire container must be defined. Thanks! --Ben

Hi Patrick, Unfortunately the filelockwait option applies to SAS files only. These are sequential ones. Good choice for SAS files, though! --Ben

Hi, I seem to do a fair amount of processing multiple log files in a folder, and typically use the infile ... filevar= approach using a DO loop. Once in a while one of the files being read is opened in exclusive mode by another application, which throws an error and causes the data step not to finish. Is there a graceful way to continue processing the rest of the files while skipping the locked one? Thanks! --Ben

As a followup, is there a way to disable SAS looking for field names on the first line of the spreadsheet in the "Libname Excel ..." approach? It picked up a title and none of the columns have reasonable data for fieldnames. Thanks! --Ben

Hi, I'm looking for ideas on how to handle error conditions from a missing or renamed tab when using Proc Import in a batch mode. I've been asked to read in a lot of older excel files, each of which has multiple tabs. I can easily detect if the file itself is present with the fileexist() function. Not so much with a missing or mis-named tab within the spreadsheet. Each proc import is followed by a data step to transform it, then a proc append. If proc import doesn't find the tab, it won't create the output file as it doesn't know what to put in it. The data step then chokes on a missing input dataset. Thanks! --Ben

Hi Ed, Downloaded the entire set of county files from the Census bureau and was running the macro aginst the entire batch (about 90 gig worth). The job was running along and then got: ERROR: Read Access Violation in Task [ MAPIMPORT] Exception occurred at (47D56314)... Is this typically an I/O error on the drive? Once fixed, is there a graceful way to save what was already successfully processed? --Ben

Hi, Am using SAS/GIS for the first time and downloaded the most recent TIGER files for county and state boundaries. Tried to import the .shp file for the state boundaries and got all kinds of errors thrown. Is there some step or trick that I'm missing? Sample of the log file is attached... Thanks! --Ben

Hi, I want to do a little project for a given region, and it requires that I obtain a street address and phone # for 1 or 2 people per square mile in that area. I won't be contacting them, but feeding their data into a company website with SAS to determine if they offer services in that specific location. The company won't publish their coverage area so I thought this is a slick way to build it up empirically. I'm sure public data is available for folks with published numbers. I just don't know where to go to get it, or convert lat/lon coordinates to a range of street addresses. Can anyone more familiar with this type of data offer some guidance? Thanks much! --Ben
