Mike, I would like to say that I did not know of your article on sasCommunity.org, but I know I did because I signed off on its associated sasCommunity.org tip http://www.sascommunity.org/wiki/Tips:Create_an_Informat_from_a_User-Defined_Function back in January. Hey that was 8 months ago...sigh The solution in your sasCommunity article addresses a broader problem and is a bit more sophisticated than mine. I suggest readers take a look at Mikes article for a better FCMP example. Again the link to his article is http://www.sascommunity.org/wiki/Create_an_Informat_from_a_User-Defined_Function. Folks, if you are new to PROC FCMP take a look at Mike's article and some of the others on sasCommunity.org. The idea of using a function within a format [starting in SAS 9.3] is extremely powerful as it makes most DATA step functions (and user defined functions) available in procedure steps and wherever formats are used.

I find it pointless and a total waste of time debating semantics when we can be having intellectual fun discussing algorithms! To get a better grasp of things, perhaps should look out for my upcoming article in the next issue of Pharmaceutical Programming.

Thank you everyone for your help, I understand a lot more about how the compute block works now, and how to traffic light better. Cynthia, you were absolutely right - the whole column did turn yellow. I'm looking into taking the class, I wish it was available on e-learning, so much easier to convince my manager to take e-learning classes then having to travel to the US (I'm in Canada). The web class would be great, but the schedule is so disruptive to our daily operations, but is still probably our best option.

Art, hi there. That is a good question. I can see that the team here needs to provide some best practices on how to manage all the streams and activity on the site. I would recommend using Tracking to stay on top of content that means the most to you. Tracking is different from Following a community. Tracking is for more critical content that you want to keep track of regularly. It allows you to clear out all the posts on the page by "marking all read" or viewing unread only. To track, you have to go to a forum/community (or individual thread) and click the blue "Track in Communications" to the right of the page. This will then send all updates to : https://communities.sas.com/communications Following a community (the green plus mark at the top of a page) sends those posts to your Activity Stream here: https://communities.sas.com/activity See: https://communities.sas.com/docs/DOC-1153 and https://communities.sas.com/message/122495 cc'ing

So the data are not static ("will expand over time") and will live in two places (the individual data sets and the common one). That's parallel maintenance, something to be avoided. I have not used EXCELCS, but I did find this SAS note. Not the same but it might be related. Under some versions of SAS .XLSX can be a problem while .XLS is not. http://support.sas.com/kb/37/479.html

For those browsing this thread, the paper cited by Linlin is very good, but it also discusses a number of advanced techniques. If you use this paper and its suggestions be sure that you truly understand the concepts. If you want to get an advanced in depth understanding of the DO loop, this is a very good place to start. But as Data _Null_ said 'be careful'. There are dangers for those who only partially understand the techniques and suggestions.

There are probably cases where users would like values formatted to blank to NOT be treated as a missing category by PROC FREQ, so I am not sure there is change that SAS could make that would satisfy all potential users. Using values like 77 or 99 to represent a missing value is more the way that SPSS works. In SAS you would use special missing values like .A or .M. So in your particular case I think you will benefit from recoding the actual stored values to special missing values instead. Either by making a copy of the dataset with the values recoded. Or a copy with new variables that have the special missing values.
