Does anybody have thoughts on how to perform sample size/power calculations for a mixed effects model either using PASS(or SAS) or something else?

Check out Chapter 12 in SAS for Mixed Models, 2nd ed. Also a google search on Stroup "mixed models" power will be helpful.
