Hello @ifty ,

if you are moving from SAS PC to SAS Viya, maybe the most straightforward way is to get SAS Analytics Pro in SAS Viya.

The full SAS Viya is indeed more complex and requires Kubernetes, and it is server based. While this APRO you can install it on a laptop as well.

This is a single container (Docker) and it can be installed very easily within the hour (or less!). It will provide you with SAS Studio.

I would like to refer you to the documentation:

https://documentation.sas.com/doc/en/anprocdc/v_040/dplyviya0ctr/p19vjw0smdpog4n1qsrq3q98siqh.htm

In short (eg if on windows laptop):

- prepare WSL2 substrate

- download & install Docker Desktop

- download your SAS license & SAS container manager from my.sas.com

- run container-manager install command

- run container-manager start sas-analytics-pro command

Really easy.

This quick start will allow you to login with an internal sasdemo user, but there are plenty of configuration options, and will allow you things like use of PROC PYTHON, R or SASPy https://documentation.sas.com/doc/en/anprocdc/v_040/dplyviya0ctr/p100iskw8g9zehn1hoy72fws1p3g.htm

If you are used to single user 9.4 installation, yes, Viya can seem like a nightmare.
First, I think you need a Kubernetes specialist that can prepare the environment and guide you.
IMO the default migraiton path for single users is SAS Viya Workbench.

many  thanks ; i have never heard of a kubernet ...is it even a human 🙂 and where can i buy one 🙂

this is a new installation rather than a migration , so does that make a difference; i have been told that i need to first install Docker ....after than i got lost

can you expand in very simple english what steps i need to take ...anyone...

I assume you have been reading the resources in the Viya Install Center: https://support.sas.com/en/documentation/install-center/viya.html

If you can't follow these then I'd politely suggest it is time you suggested to your management that employing an experienced Viya installation specialist is a good idea. If your only installation experience is installing SAS on a PC, this will in no way prepare you for a Viya install. The architecture is totally different for starters, and it only runs on Linux not Windows. It also makes a big difference whether you are installing on a cloud platform like AWS or Azure, or on premises. There is NO WAY we can guide you through the entire process, or large chunks of it, via a SAS Community post. That should be obvious from the resources in the above link. We can help with specific installation problems, but not teach you about Kubernetes or Docker.

the alternative is for SAS to improve its documentation if you want users to stick with it  - my polite response back

it seems it isnt as complicated in R !!

If you want to install R in a cloud environment then you also need to first understand what a cloud environment is.

Are you trying to install SAS Viya locally on a PC?

i want to install it on my local PC -its just me using it (for now) to test it and evaluate it - i can use C++ in mathematica, R and bunch of other software for ML on my local PC, so would be nice to do the same with SAS;

if it cant be done and it is necessary to install it on a cloud server - that  is fine, but should be stated at the time they are selling the product , not when the licence has been bought .  Here is some helpful text at the point of sale:  "Before you purchase the SAS license, please ensure you can install it on a cloud server  etc etc etc "

thanks

Oh, I thought your comparison with PC SAS meant your were doing a "migration".

That said, I would recommend to use SAS Viya pay-as-you-go (Azure, full Viya environement) for product evaluation scenarios. Could be easier to deploy.

Microsoft Azure Marketplace

Or, as I mentioned earlier, Viya Workbench (AWS, more suited for team/single users).

Viya is designed to be a multi-user server-based platform.  Typically someone in IT would be responsible for installing it, configuring it, connecting it to other enterprise resources, etc.

Even if it's *possible* to run Viya locally on a container, I don't know why someone would do this, unless they were a sales person or trainer with a local demo environment.

Big picture, if you just want SAS for personal analytics, Viya is not what you want (as per my understanding).  You can get PC SAS, and it installs just as easy as it always did.  Or, as mentioned, you can look into Workbench, which is a personal analytics environment running on the cloud.

I'm surprised you could end up with a Viya installer without being in IT.  I assume you got the installer from a company you work at?  And that company bought Viya but isn't running Viya, and didn't know it should be installed on a server?

Ok , so first of all  thanks to everyone who gave a response- greatly appreciated .

secondly the issue is one of configuration (you dont need an IT specialist) . perhaps a note in the installation instructions might help that one needs to "Enable Virtualization" if you are using Docker. This has to be fixed through the BIOS settings and there are some good instructions on that .

Consequently, we can finally close this chapter and the matter is resolved  - thanks to the SAS community who helped

so the current update is that the documentation was helpful, but it seems the issue is the Docker ; i get this

i get "Docker Desktop - Unexpected WSL error"

what do you do if the docker does not install on the windows.....its no so straight forward to follow the instructions im afraid to install SAS viya ; there is more troubleshooting to do....

If you are installing SAS Analytics Pro on your PC and running into issues then opening a track with SAS Tech Support is the best way to progress. You haven't provided any details of the Viya version you attempting to install and the hardware / OS you are installing on so it is hard to provide any useful advice.
