SESUG 2017 starts this weekend, on SAS campus in Cary!

It will be my first time in Cary.  I'm expecting it to be a religious experience to set foot on the famed campus. Other than collecting a sample of authentic SAS dirt and other relics, was wondering if anyone had suggestions for "must see" sites on the campus (assuming I manage to sneak away undetected from a tour group...) ?

Cheers,

--Q.

I advise you to stay with the tour group, but....

There is a small lake near the entrance (current site of the Umstead Hotel) which you can walk around. It was there that the first building s for SAS were located. Employees used to swim, fish, picnic, and canoe on the lake. The original buildings were torn down to make way for the Umstead, but that is where Goodnight, Sall, and others labored in the early years.

Inside the Umstead Hotel is some very nice artwork, including glass works, paintings, and local pottery. You can wander the public areas on the first floor and look at the art.

The Solar Farm (complete with sheep) is interesting; it will probably be on the tour.

Buildings are off limits unless you have an escort.  But the tour might go to buildings C and F where you can see some of Dr. Goodnight's extensive rock and gem collection.

I am also going to Cary for the first time, this is interesting question you have asked and I would also love to hear from others. If possible, I would like to meet some of you there. Please also let me know if any of you are presenting papers, so that I come listen to your talks.

thanks

A few hundred yards north of SAS on Harrison Avenue is Umstead State park.  SAS employees have logged many hundreds of thousands of miles running, walking, and biking in that park.  I was there this morning, and the leaves are finally starting to turn colors.
