You see the pipe (|), replace that with (,) like

This is a curious request, why do you need a macro-var?

Use a datastep to create a char-variable then use call symputx to create the macro-variable:

data _null_;
   length dummy $ 5000;
   do i = 1 to 1000;
      dummy = catx('|', dummy, put(i, z4.));
   end;
   call symputx('strange', dummy);
run;

Yes, @andreas_lds , this is a curious request, but I would ask the question of @ybz12003 differently ... why do you need numbers 1 to 1000 in either a macro variable or in a data step variable? The values are known, there's nothing dynamic here, its easy to loop through them all, and there's no point in storing them this way. Whatever the next step is for this string, there has to be a better way.
