Can someone point me towards resources to understanding how SAS thinks about proc SQL?

I know how to use Proc Sql but I don't understand how the computer thinks about Proc SQL Right now, I am using the Cody book but it is not helping me get a deeper understanding of why Proc Sql  works. Thanks!

It contains twelve chapters with two new chapters in the third edition on Fuzzy Matching Techniques and Data-driven Programming Techniques.
