The SAS EG editor, where I spend most of my day, could be much improved. I'd like to make the following suggestions to make my work easier and more efficient:

  1. When opening a file in SAS EG, it doesn't use a standard Windows file open dialog box. Instead, you must first select from Recent, My Computer, Servers, etc. If you select My Computer or Servers, you then need to select the folder. It should just open to the last accessed folder with one click. Making all of these selections every time is annoying and unproductive.
  2. Because it does not use a standard Windows file dialog, the folder of the file you are editing is not displayed, but it should be.
  3. Since you have the ability to open local or remote files, it would be very helpful if you had a window similar to WinSCP, enabling easy file transfer between your local machine and a server.
  4. In the log window, clicking on Errors, Warnings, or Notes does not correctly subset the list below to display Errors, Warnings, or Notes.
  5. Block copy (Alt + left mouse button + drag) does not work correctly (as it does in Notepad++).
    1. You can't create a block past the end of a line - you need to insert spaces first, or you will have a jagged left edge to your selection. SAS should automatically insert spaces to match the width of the selection or the line above.
    2. You can't select a vertical line and begin inserting characters. If you want to insert a vertical block of text, you need to insert it one row at a time manually. This functionality is very easy in most editors and would save me a lot of time.
  6. When performing a replace in a selection of text, the replace dialog should stay open and the selection stay selected so that you can make another replacement without having to re-select the text.
  7. It would be nice if you could easily flag a row by clicking in the left margin, similar to what you can do in Notepad++, so that you can easily find that row again after scrolling up or down.
  8. It would be helpful to have a count of the number of rows selected at the bottom of the screen, like in Excel, so that you can easily count code lists and the like.

What version of EG are you using? I'm using EG 8.3 and block copy works fine in both Program and Log tabs.

Thank you for your product suggestion for SAS Enterprise Guide. We are looking at further enhancing integration of SAS Enterprise Guide with SAS Viya 4. We don't have any plans for adding any other new features in the foreseeable future.

Welcome to the latest, or at least a recent example of, editor wars. Features of programming editors have been discussed/argued/ nearly come to blows from the time electronic files replaced punch cards or tape for code entry. Oh for the days of EMACS vs VI discussions and how that upstart Windows will never get anywhere...

Well at least EG has had a stay of execution, now that it is supported with Viya 4.

Yes, glad that EG got that stay of execution.  But since they are updating it to integrate with Viya 4, I'm surprised they would do that but then also put a freeze on adding features to it.  I thought Viya 4 integration would suggest the EG would have a new life ahead of it.  EG is also supposed to be able to connect to Workbench before Studio can.  Would be nice to have a clear roadmap for development of SAS IDEs.  I'm not expecting any Display Manager updates.  And clearly VS code extension is getting very active development.  But I still don't understand the roadmap for EG and Studio...

@Quentin - Couldn't agree more. Installed client IDE's retain some significant advantages over web-based ones.

So, if a (paying) customer recently switched from EG 7.15 to EG8.3 and the company is not going to use Viya, all we have, here, is "Status changed to: Suggestion Closed

At least I hope SAS will make features backporting, so that a customer can take profit of improvements.

Pretty sure I'll remember that, when it will be survey time.

Also, I'm speaking about some extremely useful "gone features", like tasks' log (per task, not in the Submission Status).
