Whenever I try to do a task, like summary statistics rather than the task coming up I get what I show below. If I try eventually I get the task, but it takes many many tries and it's getting worse. This is what shows up when I try to do a task
any help on how to fix this would be very appreciated. It did not use to occur.
Tasks like Summary Statistics require input data, so when you launch a task and see a file dialog, it's an indication that there isn't active input data in the project.
Now, your file selector in the screenshot is unexpected, as it should have selectors for SAS sources like libraries in addition to just your local computer. Is it possible that you don't have a local SAS installation and no active profile for a remote SAS server? One of these is required, so that SAS can be used to perform the data access and analysis.
Not sure if this helps but this shows the source (generated by an import task) that generates the results. In this case I was finally able to get the task to work, but it took many efforts to do so. It is very strange it will eventually work, but takes many attempts. And I see nothing different in what I am doing when it works, and when it does not (generates the request you saw originally).
As a guess, there might be something that the application is "remembering" as a prior selection or preference that is causing this. To test this, here's what I would do:
DELETE or RENAME this folder:
%appdata%\SAS\EnterpriseGuide\8
This folder contains all of your set and remembered preferences/options for the application. It will reset your Tools->Options settings, window layouts, and similar values to the default "out of the box" settings. I'd say rename the folder if your afraid of losing something, but in general it is safe to delete it. It's only your local settings, nothing to do with your SAS environment or the installed application.
Then see if you're experiencing the same behaviors with your projects after completing this step.
In Windows Explorer, navigate to
%appdata%\SAS\EnterpriseGuide
by typing/pasting it into the address field at the top.
(The "%appdata%" will resolve to your local profile folder automatically)
Then delete the subfolder named "8" -- that's it.
Any chance you have a dual monitor, maybe the task is hidden.
I would clear your desk top/s of extra windows, save and close EG, restart EG and open/create a new EG project (do not have the EG window fully expanded.).
Then, expand Servers, expand Local or SASAPP or whatever your server is named, then expand Libraries, expand Files, then double-click to open the data into the project's data window that you want to analyze, now, go to Tasks > Browse > Describe > Summary Statistics.
If that does not work, then, perhaps you have EG 8.1 or 8.2 running on a Windows 11 for which those versions are not supported. You would want to be at EG 8.3 or above.
If your EG is already 8.3 or above, yet the steps above did not work then let me know.
