This creates thefile.txt,
Q: but how do I fill it with SAMPLE?

However PROC PRINTO is generally used for the log and lst output.

Actually your code just creates a SAS datafile. You can find a lot of examples on the web for creating a text file. E.g., take a look at: http://ciser.cornell.edu/faq/SAS/write_delimited_file.shtml
