How do I create a simple text file?

I am a newbie using EG v4.3.

This creates thefile.txt,

Q: but how do I fill it with SAMPLE?

Actually your code just creates a SAS datafile.  You can find a lot of examples on the web for creating a text file.  E.g., take a look at: http://ciser.cornell.edu/faq/SAS/write_delimited_file.shtml

I'm not sure what the end goal is. 

However PROC PRINTO is generally used for the log and lst output.
