Creating graphs for a paper - PNG or RTF (or PDF)?

Hi! I am preparing graphs using SAS ODA, to be included in a Word-document.

Later on this document will be converted into a pdf file and published. 

My question:  What is the best way to produce the graphs?  Shall I use PNG or RTF (or PDF)?

At present I use both RTF and PNG. In my opinion PNG gives better overal picture.

Another question: What useful options are there to modify the graphs.

Many thansk in advance. SAS Graph is quite nice, but I do not know it very well.
