Here is a simple answer from a presentation:

SAS/CONNECT® Software enables you to view and update your data on multiple platforms from any one connected computer.

The paper that came from was: http://www2.sas.com/proceedings/sugi30/023-30.pdf

However, if you don't bother to read the documentation, and as many papers on such topics as you can, you will be doing yourself a disservice.
