Hi Folks, We have a VBA Excel macro that's been in use in our enterprise for at least 5-10 years. The macro makes use of the SASWorkspaceManager 1.1 Type Library to connect to our Workspace Server to extract SAS data into Excel. We have some beta testers of MS Office 365 who are getting errors during the SAS connection step from the same VBA macro. The chief difference is that o365 is running as a 64bit app on Win11(x64) in the beta test environment while previously it runs in 32bit MS Office Excel installed on Win10(x64). The error message is not very helpful. Something like, "Object not registered." It is raised in the VBA code with the first reference to SASWorkspaceManager during an object declaration. I'm wondering if this a bitwise issue between o365 and the SAS library. The users are able to connect to the SAS Metadata Server without issue from the SAS Add-in in o365 Excel.

Hi Margaret, Our SAS installation is currently running on RHEL7 so the paper on optimizing SAS on RHEL6/7 is very helpful. Our Linux admins plan to upgrade to RHEL8 in the coming months. Do you know if there is an update to the paper that will cover RHEL8? I understand that the paper seems to have been written by Red Hat. Can you point me to the right people at Red Hat to direct this question? Thanks, Dan

I've been looking into SAS use of memory by our systems with an eye toward configuring system options to make better use of system memory. My team supports ~75 SAS users on a 3-tier Unix system with separate hosts for Compute, Metadata, and Mid-tier. I found the paper, "Troubleshoot Your Performance Issues: SAS Technical Support Shows You How" (333-2009), from Global Forum 2009. It's a very useful paper but it's a bit dated now. I'm wondering if there's an update to this paper which reflects system options available in SAS 9.4 as well as optimizing SAS on virtual servers. I'd appreciate any links to relatively recent advice on configuring SAS running on Unix for a multi-user environment. Our SAS users are all using SAS Enterprise Guide 8.3 clients running on Win10. - Dan Williams

Hello All, I've been perusing the SAS Environment Manager User's Guide to see what more I might be able to do with it. Something we do at the Unix command line constantly is monitor the remaining space in the directory defined by the WORK system option in sasv9.cfg. Monitoring this in Env. Manager sounded promising but it looks like this can only be done if SASWORK is set to /tmp. The User's Guide gives an example of setting up a custom metric viewer portlet on the Env Manager dashboard, "Adding a SASWork Disk Space Metric Viewer." This metric is on the compute server SAS Home Directory 9.4, service SAS Work Directory. The attached screenshot shows the resource page in Env Manager. On our Linux installation, we've created a mount point /saswork and designated 2GB disk space to this mount point. If you look at the screenshot, you'll see that "SAS Work Directory" is defined as /tmp and I found under Tools Menu-Configure Service that the only configurable property is a shared property, "directory." I changed this property value from /tmp to /saswork but /tmp continues to be what is monitored. The shared property does not seem to be monitored. Does someone know how to change the directory that is monitored so that I can have a useful metric to monitor in Env Manager?

DanielKaiser, the first thing I did was run SDM and set the preference to SEG. The behaviors I have described are what I'm getting now; after setting the pref in SDM. So, the default EG is still EG7. If our users think that it's important enough, we might try uninstalling/re-installing EG7 but I don't think it's that critical. I'll post an update here, if they do.

Thanks for the ideas, Everyone. I haven't found a solution. SAS Deployment Manager clearly does not give a choice between versons of SEG. My choice is either Base SAS, SEG, or SAS Universal Viewer. Once I set that option to SEG and then double-click a .egp file, I get a Windows prompt that asks, "How do you want to open this .egp file?" EG7.1 and "More apps" are presented as my options. When I expand the More apps option, I get a list of many apps (some of them SAS apps) but EG8 is not in the list. When I click on, "Look for another app on this PC," I navigate to C:\Program Files\SASHome\SASEnterpriseGuide\8\ and double-click SEGuide.exe. That starts up EG7.1! The .egp file is listed in Windows Explorer with an EG8 icon. Interestingly, If I navigate in Windows Explorer to C:\Program Files\SASHome\SASEnterpriseGuide\8\ and double-click SEGuide.exe, EG8 starts up! Also, if I right-click on an existing .egp file, I have options to "Open with SAS Enterprise Guide 7.15" and a separate option to "Open with SAS Enterprise Guide 8.3." Both of these options work correctly. It seems like we're going to have to uninstall EG7 to get the default to switch to EG8.

We recently installed SAS EG 8.3 on all our users' PCs. We left the previous version 7.15 installed to give people the old familiar option to fall back on, if they wished. Now that the two versions are installed, users find that double clicking on a SAS dataset opens the 7.15 version of SEG. We tried using SAS Deployment Manager (Manage SAS File Extensions) to change the default product for file extensions but that doesn't give us the choice between versions of SEG. It only offers a choice of SEG or PC SAS (if installed). Most systems don't have PC SAS installed so there's only one option to choose: SAS Enterprise Guide (64-bit). Is there some way at a lower level - maybe in the Windows registry?) to set the preference for the 8.3 version of SEG?

Thanks, Greg. The filter button did the trick for the first part. Then I reconfigured the user's group memberships - I actually removed her from a group that did not have ReadMetadata permission - and that solved the other issue. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Hello Folks, I've recently started upgrading our SAS installation. I'm seeing some odd behavior from SAS Enterprise Guide 8.3 (ver 8.3.0.103) where it has been upgraded on a few Windows terminal servers for testing by our business users and our support team in IT. The first thing I'd like to mention is that when I run SEG 8.3, only pre-assigned Oracle libraries are visible. When I run SEG 7.15 (still installed on the same machine) all libraries - both pre-assigned and not - are visible with a different color icon for each of the two. One (and only one) of our business users sees both pre-assigned and not pre-assigned libraries when she starts SEG 8.3. Other business users seem to see libraries presented the way I see them; pre-assigned only. The other strange thing that's going on for the "One-and-only" user is that while she sees both pre-assigned and not libraries, she doesn't see a new Oracle library that I just created whether I set it to pre-assigned or not. Other SEG 8.3 users and I can see the new library in SEG 8.3 when it is pre-assigned. When the One-and-only user starts SEG 7.15, she gets the same behavior; she sees both types of libraries but not the new library. So, the issue seems to be on the client end with SEG 8.3 rather than the metadata server. The metadata server (and other Office Analytics servers) have been upgraded to 9.4M7.
