Company: Taurex Drill Bits Company background: Taurex Drill Bits is a subterranean drill bit designing and manufacturing company that engages industry leading metrological scanning technology, image acquisition, and data development to produce performance leading drill bits within all aspects of drilling, from oil and gas to geothermal. Contact: Cameron Devers Title: Data Scientist Country: United States Award Category: Rookie of the Year Why did your organization choose SAS? What business problem were you trying to solve? Taurex chose SAS as we needed a partner that would move as fast as we do. Despite being a small company, we compete with massively large companies for the same limited market share. We needed a partner that could help propel our rate of data engagement and learning. Drill Bits are a unique challenge as it is difficult to run a high volume or parts without changing either the operational process or an aspect of the design. Understanding how these parts wear both faster and in more detail is critical to providing the best possible designs.
How has SAS helped you to solve that problem? Recently, with the help of consulting with SAS experts, we have developed a machine learning powered dashboard to help us not only better understand and discuss the design aspects of our products, but also help recommend designs to our own customers. The insights generated from developed solution have helped our engineers understand cross-part design influences better, our sales team better engage our customers, and our customers grow in confidence in our products. The increase in data sharing and knowledge transfer as a result has led ot an increase in actual engineering discussions both internally and externally. What products are you using and how are you using them? We primarily use SAS Viya. Being able to construct machine learning processes in the background, and push the results into interactive visualizations has democratized the complex data our company collects easily to all internal and external parties.
What advice would you give to other new SAS users? While there is a learning curve, and maybe even growing pains, work through them. We have gained insight and improved workflow in ways we would not have considered before engaging with SAS
