Thanks for your reply. Below's what I get without the BY statement. N should be the number of occupations. In a simple CORR procedure for alpha, you list a number of variables you want correlated. However, in this dataset, instead of each of these four element IDs being a variable, they are listed under one elementID variable. I didn't feel like creating a new dataset separating them into individual variables (because I don't know how to), I hoped to use a program to get the alpha calculated. Do you think I have to create a new dataset outputting these into four distinct variables with each assigned the score value? If so, do you have any suggestions on how to do that? Thanks very much!! I have a dataset with hundreds of occupations (var occsoc). As you can see below with a listing of the 3 first occupations of the dataset, data lines of the dataset are repeated for each occupation because it goes by numerous elementID's. For each occupation, I am creating an index which sums up the scores of particular element ID's ( '1.B.2.a', '1.B.2.b', '1.B.2.c', '1.B.2.d' - essentially the first four lines of each occupation). These four elements are dimensions of a job characteristic. I want to measure the reliability of the four items using Cronbach's alpha. When I used the following SAS program, I got a Pearson correlation for each separate occupation. I need the alpha value across the occupations - essentially one alpha value for the index. There must be a way to tell SAS how to do that. I tried class statement but it doesn't work. Thanks for your help!! no, it's only in acs2016 which I see in proc print also has missing met2013. But I think it's because I sorted it at one point with met2013 first, which probably lists first the missing observations then the rest. I should add, the original set was once sorted by met2013 and occsoc, then before the merge I sorted it by occsoc alone. Could sorting it in the past by met2013 have done something to cause this? proc sort data=IPUMS.ACS2016; by met2013 occsoc; run;

I merged two datasets together using a common variable (occsoc); afterwards, a different variable (met2013) appears missing when I print the data but when I run a proc freq on the variable, it's all there like it is in the original set. Any ideas why it's doing this and also should I ignore it? (It is a variable I don't plan to use much if at all but would like it ready to go if need be). In case this matters, one of the files (not the one containing met2013 variable) was once an Excel file that I imported into SAS and cleared of formats and informats before merging the two. Thanks! (Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to duplicate the dataset by get rid of the formats.) Hello, I managed to create the desired data set. I have one last question pertaining to a permanent save of outputted data. I thought if I write the libname in "output out=onetlib.onetmerge" in the proc summary that it would create a permanent dataset regardless of whether the formats are permanent (since in proc format I use "library=work;"). When I ask it to proc print the data without a proc format running, it states "ERROR: Format $OCCF not found or couldn't be loaded for variable OCCSOC." I plan to merge this with other data (IPUMS) and I would like to save permanent sets, and have multiple copies in different locations. Thanks so much!!! @PaigeMiller thanks for your help so far. I tried your method but I'm stuck. I'm new to formats so bear with me. Question: Does a data set need to exist for proc format to create values? It seems to me that some catalog gets created that simply says all these values will be called this? I believe your last post you were trying to have me import the Excel file from which these formats would be created. Here's the code I tried and the log. I only want to do the 3 occupations until I can see it working. I was hoping to create a new data set with one observation (occupation 110XX and the averaged indexes). You seem to be hitting at what I need although I'm not savvy enough to confirm if that's exactly it. Have you seen my reply to the previous post where I include my data and an Excel attachment? Maybe that would answer your question regarding the rule. The Excel sheet shows exactly what needs to be combined, and as you can tell, it is quite arbitrary.

Yes, it is a typo. I do mean 2 and 3. Sorry about that. (I'm very sleep deprived). And regarding the char and num, I forgot the rule, and for the purpose of my actual project, it's all numerical so that won't be an issue. Regarding the rules, I'm not sure how to answer that other than provide you with an Excel sheet of the values on one column that will end up being the new names ("baskets") and on the other column the list that will be combined. I need to merge two sets of occupation data (ONET that has some detailed occupations that will be grouped together such as many types of doctors under one code "Physician" and the other set IPUMS, the destination data, where I will insert ONET variables into). In IPUMS, the occupation codes are sometimes matching the ONET and sometimes they are broad and require that ONET occupations be grouped to match it. The other issue is that in ONET, the occupation is coded for example 11-1020.00 and in IPUMS it's 111020. So I need to changed the ONET values to reflect those in IPUMS, as well as average out the indexes for all the occupations that I'm grouping.
