@Ksharp Indeed the SPDE engine compresses tables MUCH better than the base engine. Among many other great features.
Note that this is very misleading:

SAS is very happy exactly storing 300-digit integers. Not all such numbers though.

If the data set has already been sorted with a SAS PROC SORT, there will be a flag, and it will not be re-sorted.
A useful tip is to always set this flag.
If the data set comes from say a data step, the flag will not be set, even if the by statement is used. For valid reasons.
One can use the sortedby= option in a data step, but the order is not validated. In this case, run proc sort with the presorted option to set the validated flag. I wish this flag could be set by the data step, see here.
