SAS University .sas7dbat Error

In SAS University Edition, I am trying to characterize data for a .sas7dbat file. However, when I select the .sas7dbat file I recieve a red exclamation mark and cannot add categories for characterization (hit the plus (+) button and no response).   See Error screenshot.
