I think Art's code is good enough except for typing some more words. It is very fast way for large tabls. Keep in mind that SAVE statement will only keep the &base , other tables will be deleted include other needed tables, so you should be careful to use it. Ksharp

Note that NWAY contradicts the specifications in the TYPES statement. Apparently SAS ignores NWAY in this situation.

Peter, Of course data_null_ is correct .. as he virtually always is! However, the other responses were also correct. For the fun of it I ran a one trial test on 1 million identical records. I stopped at one test as I happened to like the results: my proposed method came in first (cpu: 1.01 seconds), data_null_'s second (cpu: 1.04 seconds), and your suggestion third (cpu: 1.14 seconds). Of course, on repeated tests, I would guess that any of the methods could come in at any position. Your and datanull's methods are definitely easier to type and I'd gladly award both of you correct answers if I could, but it wasn't my post.

As others have pointed out, it should already be sorted. You can easily let SAS know that it's sorted by setting the sortedBy= data set option. This can be useful when creating subsets of the parent data set that you ABSOLUTELY KNOW ARE STILL IN THE SORT ORDER. Here is the syntax: data junk (sortedBy= i x); do i = 1 to 10; x +1; output; end; run; proc contents data = junk; run; Skipping redundant sorts is usually the best way to gain effeciency in code, but do yourself a big favor and comment the hell out of it Good luck. -s www.sascoders.com
