Well 90-99 all consist of 9x, so you can just do: data want; set have (where=(substr(naics,1,2) ne '21' and char(naics,1) ne '9')); run;

Like I mentioned, not what you think. It it creates a predicted variable called PREDICT. The residuals (predicted - actual) are stored in a variable called Resid. Open the dataset and examine if manually or run a proc contents and explore the variables there. Proc contents data=reg_results; run;

Or if the first dataset in the merge statement (E1 in your case) has company with the longer length, it will prevail. In general the first encounter with a variable establishes its attributes (length, format, label), while the last encounter establishes the value.

You should be able to do that with proc freq and class country year family_code; Use a where=dataset option to only use records that you want counted.

The data you posted looks very much like it was a CSV created from Excel. Knowing enough to convert to CSV is a very good thing. But I caution you to be very careful as Excel can have issues with exporting data depending on how it was entered or created. Values, such as product identifiers sometimes have aritmetic applied if the value has a - in it and Dates can be very problematic as to output format.

The simplest way is to use list operator in SAS: data want; set have (keep=<first>--<last>); run; Replace <first> with the variable to start from and <last> with the last one - you of course know what these are as it is your data. I would not rely on order of columns in the dataset - that can change very easliy and then you get different results.

The basic method for using proc transpose for such a problem looks like this: data have; input company$ variable$ val2000 val2001 val2002; cards; a x 1 2 3 a y 4 5 6 a z 7 8 9 b x 11 12 13 b y 14 15 16 b z 17 18 19 ; run; proc transpose data=have out=want (rename=(_name_=year)); by company; id variable; var _numeric_; run; Make sure that your "have" dataset has values in "variable" that comply to SAS naming conventions, otherwise you will have a hard time dealing with the variable names. In my given example, you might want to run a second data step that converts the "year" variable to numeric.
