I believe all these features you desire are provided for with the SAS statements SYSTASK and WAITFOR.

Correction to search argument for Google: create word document microsoft add in site:sas.com

If you want to use a macro without the extra step of a compiled library, just put the definition of the macro before it's first invocation.
