I have a questions regarding how SAS9.4 server could take advantage of the multiple hardware threads of a CPU-core on hosting machine. For server level hosting machines, for example, mid-range IBM Power servers or SUN SPARC servers (both machines are certified to run SAS9.4 server), each CPU core could have multiple hardware threads (for example, a SUN SPARC M8 CPU-core supports 8 hardware threads). On the contrary, for a hosting machine with Intel CPU, each core might only support just 2 hardware threads. My question is: could SAS9.4 server (assuming running on AIX, Solaris, or Linux OS) takes advantage and fully utilize the multiple hardware threads of a CPU core (e.g., the 8 hardware threads of each SUN SPARC M8 CPU-core)?   Also, is there any SAS document mentions this topic ?   I appreciate your insights and time, ... Hello SAS Friends,   We have a small SAS9.4 grid (only 3 nodes) server on Solaris, but we don't have DR (Disaster Recovery). Also except for the most basic load balance and failover, we haven’t been using advanced features like grid queue, queue priority etc.   If we install SAS Viya on Linux machines, we could install SPRE (SAS Programming Runtime Environment) at the same time. Since it takes time and relatively long learning curve for both SAS developers and SAS Administrators to migrate from SAS9.4 to Viya, the whole process I think could be around one year.   One interesting question is, if we install SPRE as well, is it possible for us to put SPRE as a DR environment for our current SAS9.4 server ?   I appreciate your insights,   BigSASFan ... Hello,   I like Process Manager as a scheduler in SAS Grid environment. But one thing confused me is that Platform Suite for SAS is an OEM version of Platform LSF that does not allow for additional shell scripts to be executed. The bsub command can be used to manually submit shell scripts, but these have a hard execution limit of 30 seconds if they are not a SAS program. If you are looking to run shell scripts on LSF, you would need a full LSF license rather than the OEM version.   How do you schedule shell script programs via Process Manager on a SAS Grid Platform? I could embed shell script in a SAS program using xcmd and system calls through SAS, but not convenient. Any thoughts are welcome.   Regards, ... View more

For example, which shared file systems are recommended for  WORK / UTILLOC / permanent dataset libraries in a Solaris cluster? Dear Fellow SAS Admin,   I would never use NFS for SAS datasets, neither permanent SAS libraries, or WORK/UTILLOC filesystems.   But I do have a question regarding the possibility to use NFS for some SAS deployment/installation/configuration/backup directories.   For example, our SAS platform is on a Solaris operating system, it composed of the following servers:        1. SAS Metadata Server Cluster: has three SAS Metadata Servers. All three servers:                - share SAS Metadata server backup directory;                - share SAS Metadata server installation directory;         2. SAS Compute Server Cluster (GRID): has three SAS GRID nodes. All three GRID nodes:                 - share SAS GRID compute server installation directory;                 - share SAS GRID compute server configuration directory;        3. SAS Mid-tier Server Cluster: has two SAS Mid-tier Servers. The two servers:                 - share SAS Mid-tier installation directory;        4. All the above SAS tiers & servers, :                 - share a centralized SAS Configuration Backup Vault;                 - share SAS Software Depot directory;                 The above shared directories or filesystems are not for SAS datasets, or WORK/UTILLOC filesystems, but for SAS deployment/installation/configuration/backup purposes.   My question is, what's your opinion to use NFS for these shared directories or filesystems?
