Thank you very much Steve for trying it out! I have now contacted sas technical support to try and find out how I overcome the problem of office 32bit on a 64bit operative system. It is said that this should help with the import wizard which will let me control how the variables are being comprehended by sas. Please tell me, what import method did you use? Did you use proc import, or the import wizard? ... View more

Thank you Reeza. Here it is, sample of the dataset attached and beneath the log for both the code shown in my first post (1) and the log for the same code but without the WHERE statement and the variable ref__no_ (2) (1) (2) I think it's important to note that the code shown in my first post has worked fine untill I made an update of SAS from 9.1 to 9.4 and had to import the dataset again. I would love to share a copy, but as far as I can see I can't attach anything else than an image or a film here? Or can I? It's simply to large, the dataset, to take a photo of it - there are too many columns (about 50 of them...). ... View more

Thanks for your reply! Yes it would have the two consecutive underscores. What is odd is that the very same code works fine with my old dataset (the same as now just without some corrections). I've also tried excluding the ref_no variable totally from the procedure but it makes no difference. ... View more

Thank you for your answer. I've tried excluding the ref_no totally, but it still doesn't work: I get the following: "Response variables cannot be listed in the CLASS statement" or just "The SAS System stopped processing this step because of error" and sometimes the log even tells me "no dataset to look up variables"! Why suddenly that? It DOES have a dataset decribed for it!. I have tried reducing the code too, see answer to Ballard, but that doesn't help either. ... View more

Yes I've tried a proc freq and a proc print and it looks like it should, including the ref_no variable. And I've tried with and without the WHERE statement, but the log either tells me "Response variables cannot be listed in the CLASS statement" (and I don't get what that means - what is a response variable?) or it just tells me: "The SAS System stopped processing this step because of error" with no information on the actual error. On another note, why is the guessingrow statement not working? Am I using it completely wrong here? ... View more

I read the same at the page I linked to; that it could be a 32bit to a 64 bit sas problem, and now that I've checked it out it goes to show that this IS the problem - I AM running with a 32bit office package! Darn, I bought the computer with office already installed - why would they put a 32bit office package on a 64bit system!? Alright I'll try and install the PC files server, you think that would solve the problem so to be able to use the import wizard? ... View more

I don't know why I'm getting this message "ERROR: No data set open to look up variable" when I use the genmod proc. I HAVE specified the dataset an it works fine when using the dataset in other procedures (like the proc contents seen below).    What really confuses me is that the exact same code works when working with another dataset in another window. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong here? Is it to do with the code or the datset or...? Kind regards Emilie ... View more

Thank you all for your fine and much appreciated replies! After doing various Things back and forth the PROC IMPORT ultimately worked, but I can't see what I did differently. So I'll still post some images and explanation below of the problems I experienced. SADLY, though, the import wizard still doesn't work which I would much prefer to use over the Proc import. As explained at the end, for Patrick, the problem seems to stem from sas... see link. @ Reeza: I tried importing the csv file as well, but that didn't work either. Below is an image of the output (@Ballard too). And this output doesn't make sense, for example I have 50 variables, not 3.... And the print of the imported ´dataset was this: @ Patrick: I tried using only the 10 first rows but I got the same result. About the wizard I'm using PC SAS and  the link here: http://support.sas.com/kb/43/933.html explains the problem that I'm experiencing with the wizard, but the solution the sas-site suggests doesn't work so I'm told to contact sas technical support. ... I'm trying to import an Excel file. It's rather large, the file, but I don't think that should have anything to do with my problem. Because of an error in sas 9.4 (or so i'm told) I cannot use the import wizard (under "File"), where the error message says: "Connection failed. See log for details". So instead I'm using PROC IMPORT. But when I do this the Excel file is definitely not read correctly bu sas. When using the proc contents it only shows me gibberish/not what the dataset would look like whatsoever.  Here's my code below.
