The HL7 documentation in the Implementation Guide for CDA has a thorough description of templates of the types of info that may be in the files. Still looking into options for existing applications that will at least transform the XML into another format that can be used more directly, but I'm starting to work on design of code to parse the files to pick up data elements myself as a backup plan. Thanks for the tips on parsing!

My company is a health care data integrator. For an upcoming engagement, we are expecting to receive electronic health record data files in HL7 CDA XML format, from multiple sources. Hoping to find someone with experience loading this kind of data into SAS datasets, to get information on how you have done it, and whether you have had to work around files that have incomplete/incorrect XML content. We work with base SAS, version 9.4 (TS1M2), in a linux environment, and run programs in batch mode.

Hi Jaap, Thank you for pointing out the SAS options related to macro source location. I have found mautocomploc option, which writes the macro location to the log as it is compiling. Do you know if there is a corresponding macro variable that would contain the location, so that I could refer to it programmatically? Or would I need to use the option mautolocindes and then use proc catalog to see the path names of macros that have been compiled/invoked in the program? I am running programs in batch mode, using Version 9.3 (TS1M1). Marty Porter

Sorry - that was a typo from simplifying my example. I had a double ampersand because the number at the end of the filrf variable name is being calculated, so the field reference was &&filrf&fnbr. I'm using %sysfunc to open and read the directories using macro code. my initial code did not escape the spaces, but was not working. I have just experimented with using %nrbquote to preserve the spaces in the macro variables, and that does seem to work - thanks! I am using dopen and dread to look at all of the files and directories in a particular directory structure, but dopen is failing to open directories whose names contain embedded spaces. I'm running SAS 9.3 on a unix platform, and have escaped the spaces using the backslash (\) character, so a a directory named 'older mapping docs' is referred to as 'older\ mapping\ docs'. The filename function to assign a fileref to the directory gives a zero (successful) return code, but when I try to use dopen to open the directory, the DID (directory ID) returned is 0, meaning the operation failed. Any suggestions for working around this problem?

I submitted a technical support inquiry, and found that WindowHeight and WindowWidth can be controlled using proc template. Are there options to specify the size of window that Excel will open when you generate XML code using ODS and the ExcelXP tagset? Worksheets I generate all seem to open in a small window, requiring a resize to see the reports that have been generated.
