Oh HA! The original table did not have 0's, it had blank cells when a parameter was missing. I flipped the if/then statement to if vars(i)<>0 then vars_new(i)=1; else vars_new(i)=0; and that did the trick. I think I see the next step from here. Thanks for all your help!

Following up on PG's response--How do you plan to deal with all possible models when some of the independent variables are exclusive categories? Does it make any sense at all to include (for instance) 'urban', and exclude 'suburban', especially when this will exclude a large part of your database? Right. My dichotomous variables are basically on a size scale, with small=0 and large=1, and there are only two categories, so I think I will be able to interpret the models, but thanks for pointing that out.
