When retrieveing metadata from sas data set I tend to use dictionary.columns and others. Are there any differences between sashelp.vcolumn and dictionary.columns in PROC SQL. I am not aware if sashelp.column has additional functionality than PROC SQL counter part.

I was trying to include some system automatic variables (syserr or syscc) to get some error meaages. I wonder which is appropriate to capture error mesages and what is the difference between them? data test; set sashelp.class; run; %put &syscc; data test; set sashelp.class; run; %put &syserr;

@LinusH Windows environment. This is related to financial data such customer information, transactions etc. The programs are scheduled to run daily, hence, they are updated daily. Some programs also create historical data (appending today's data to yesterday;s). Data records are in hundred of millions. When I am creating some ad hoc report using the permanent data set that is currently being written by the program, I get this error. I suppose I have to wait until it finished buliding the data set.

Array is nothing. It's just a of group of variables that you want perform similar operations on it.

I am constantly getting this error "A lock is not available for dataset" when data set is writing or some body has opened the data set. I wonder if there is an effective solution to overcome this or to know if the data set is in use. Thanks !

I am trying to put original variable and formatted variable values together. This does not work since I have to format the original value. Is there a way to get around this? proc format; value type 1="good" 2="bad"; run; data have; input x; cards; 1 2 ; data want; set have; format x type.; y='x'; test1=vvalue(x); test2=vvaluex(y); run; Desired output: x test1 test2 1 good good 2 bad bad
