In December 2019, a new respiratory disease was discovered in Wuhan, China. The illness is caused by a new type of coronavirus, known as 'severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2,' or SARS-CoV-2. The illness that can result from this virus infection is called 'coronavirus disease 2019,' or COVID-19. On March 11, 2020 – WHO declared the outbreak a global pandemic.

This SAS Visual Analytics infographic shows the global impact on selected countries as of June 24, 2020. While some countries are well into recovery - others have just seen the start of the outbreak. The report shows the top 24 countries measured by total number of confirmed cases and the related development of new and active cases (using a 7 day moving average). You can also see the peak of new cases since the outbreak started. For some countries the peak occurred very recently - clearly indicating that this pandemic isn't over just yet...
This report uses a precision container for each country to better organize related KPI's. I'm using a simple data-driven-content object to render the country flag and standard objects such as geo for the faded background country map. Due to the detail and number of countries I wanted to include, the report ended up very high resolution. It's best viewed on a high resolution monitor.

It has been a little while since I last updated this infographic - so here is the new ranking based on numbers recorded December 6, 2020. A lot has changed - compared to the June 2020 snapshot. Particularly worrying are the very recent peak dates in many countries - indicating, this pandemic is far from over.
