The Western Users of SAS® Software (WUSS) is a non-profit  organization that exists to support local SAS® software users groups within the western region.     While we won’t be returning to our normal in-person conference format for 2021, there will be many opportunities to be a part of the WUSS community this year.  We are planning a variety of virtual content and networking events for later in the year, so please check back here often for more information.  In addition, WUSS is sponsoring a series of online training classes hosted by industry experts throughout the remainder of 2021 and into next year.   Registration is now open for Kevin Lee's Python Programming Seminar – Basics for Statistical Programmers and Statisticians.    Agenda for the seminar: Python Programming Seminar – Basics Introduction to Python for statistical programmers and statisticians Jupyter Notebook (Python programming platform) download and implementation Python Variables Type: Number, String, Lists, Dictionaries, Arrays, Data Frames Simple variable manipulation – If & For statements Python Function development and comparison with SAS Macro Import external Modules/Functions Reading and writing external data (excel, SAS datasets, Images) Data manipulation using Python Introduction of NumPy and Array Introduction of Pandas and DataFrame: DataFrame vs SAS datasets Basic data manipulation – merge, sort, variables drop/addition Create SDTM DM dataset using SAS raw datasets Please click here to view the lineup of online training classes and register!

In these classes we focus entirely on coding, providing a fundamental education in how SAS thinks and unlocking the power to use the incredible versatility of SAS code. Whether you’re entirely new to SAS, new to coding, or just want to brush up on the fundamentals, these classes are for you.   Part 1: DATA steps and data manipulation (or How to Train Your SAS Datasets)   Together we’ll walk through the fundamental building blocks of a SAS program with a deep dive into DATA steps and data manipulation, including SAS libraries, conditional processing, functions, and more. In the SAS Communities Library there are hundreds thousands of helpful articles on just about any SAS related topic. SAS also has a very active blog site, again with years worth of posts, on many different topics. For the next SAS Bowl, we'll turn our focus to one of the more popular blogs:  Graphically Speaking.    SAS Bowl XIII, Graphically Speaking blog, is scheduled for Tuesday, October 12, 2021 at 4 PM ET.   Graphically Speaking blog 411 The Graphically Speaking blog focuses on the usage of ODS Graphics for data visualization in SAS. The blog covers topics related to the Statistical Graphics procedures, the Graph Template Language and the ODS Graphics Designer.   The blog is written and curated by familiar SAS Community Super Freqs @GraphGuy  and @DanH_sas. The duo somehow publish on a weekly basis, on some of the most interesting topics found on the site.   Resources It was extremely hard to whittle down the vast archive to focus on a few posts. Here is a list of  we'll use to pull questions from for the SAS Bowl.  Cary NC data - parks and trails - uses Proc SGmap and a tile background, with markers and lines overlaid SAS graphs for R programmers - maps from shapefiles - imports a Shapefile, and overlays choro polygons on Proc SGmap tiles SAS graphs for R programmers - paneled graphs - introduces and uses Proc SGpanel  SAS graphs for R programmers - needle plots - needle plot in Proc SGplot, showing gasoline prices (a timely topic): These mortgage rates look shady to me! - shading areas in a line plot Will vinyl records outsell CDs in 2019? - an analysis using a stacked bar chart   This list misses some of my top picks (see the end of this post for my faves). I HIGHLY encourage you to view the blog and dig into more of it's awesomeness. I truly check the blogs site on a weekly basis to see what's new.   SAS Bowl and event details For those who may be new to the SAS Bowl, you can find game history and specifics in this Community memo. There you'll also find links to previous events, which include recordings.   Add the game to your calendar, download the article attachment for an event reminder, or select the 'Yes' option to the right in this Community Calendar Event. No pre-registration is required. On game day, access the game URL, provide your SAS Support Communities username (so we can identify you when you win), and show off your SAS and worldly knowledge while competing for bragging rights and SAS Community game gear.   Join the game.   'See' you October 12!   More from the blog Here are some of my favorite posts. They won't necessarily provide content for the game, but are certainly worth a read. How to make your data look worse (than it really is) Animating US COVID-19 data over time, on a county map Cracking the code, of the Star Wars timeline! Where can you own a pet kangaroo in the US? The "who can't spell what" map
