Not to get into too much detail, but what is an Overall Odds Ratio?

Not sure what you mean by overall OR.

Your example data has an Overall OR for female and male, what would that represent, how would you phrase that in a sentence?

ie if my OR is 3.4 (95% CI 2.5, 4.2)  and the event is hospital admissions:

Females are 3.4 times more likely than males to have a hospital admission (95% CI 2.5, 4.2).

Or conversely, Males are 0.3 times as likely than females to have a hospital admission (95% CI 0.24,0.4)
