The current behaviour of the 'Return to previous' report button in VA is to reload the report, not return to it. This is especially an issue if the initial report you have linked from has filters you have applied. When you select the button to return to the initial report, the filters are removed (or returned to the state as per the saved version of that report).

There would be a performance gain by returning to the report instead of reloading it, especially if the initial rpeort is complex with many objects/tabs.

What version of SAS Visual Analytics are you using?

In the modern version of SAS Visual Analytics Report Viewer (versions 7.3 and 7.4), report linking behaves in the way you are suggesting. The modern version of Report Viewer allows for multiple reports to be open at once, which makes this possible. The 'back' or 'return to previous report' button will return to the source report, maintaining the filters that were applied, rather than reloading the report and resetting any filters.

If you are using the classic version of Report Viewer in 7.3 or are using an earlier version, then it will not behave this way.

This functionality was implemented in the modern viewer in SAS Visual Analytics 7.3, and there's a classic viewer hot fix for 7.3 and 7.4 that resolves the filtering problem (SAS Note here).
