In 6.3 I can only use measures for coloring.
Just moved to VA 7.3 and I am still not able to use category variables for coloring region maps, bubble map and coordinate maps.
Thanks for your idea! This was implemented in SAS Visual Analytics 8.2 (See related doc: Data roles for a geo map -->Color) and 7.5 (Doc found here: Data roles for a geo map -->Color).
