In SAS eg, when selecting some text, the editor will highlight identical text strings. I would really like the ability to edit all of the highlighted strings ad once.

Isn' t that what Find/Replace is for?

What I am suggesting is a lot faster and more convenient.

In what way?  I am not against the idea, I just don't see the benefit.  Press cntrl+h, enter your text, the replace text and press enter.  Done.

I'd never use it. The danger that there's one instance where I don't want it changed is too big.

And the SAS Enhanced Editor already has a "replace all" button in it's find/replace function; which I never use, see above.

Other software, such as MATLAB and R, have far superior editors than the Enhanced Editor in Base SAS. Why, you might even say that SAS Studio and Enterprise Guide have better editors than the Enhanced Editor in Base SAS.

It is implemented in a lot of text editors. Here is an example.

KurtBremer: How would that happen?

@PaigeMiller, quite true, not just text editors but complete IDE's.  Yes, the Enhanced (which it was with Version 8 of SAS) Editor could be replaced, however there are a lot of diverse SAS environments now, not just Base, e.g EG, Viya, LSAF.  All of which have their own inbuilt editors, all operating differently.  Would be nice to see some sort of unified programming environment rather than trying to fix one element.

@rudfaden, you can setup any text editor you want to run with SAS if you have Base installed locally:

https://blogs.sas.com/content/sasdummy/2017/08/25/npp-with-sas/

For instance shows with notepad++.  All it is is calling the SAS exe with a file.  The level they are at however is not much more than the inbuilt editor with SAS, though text edit functions are far better.  Unfortunately it is with SAS to create a new editor, and other than above mentioned diversity, they don't seem to be interested in updating the Base Product as most use a network version or web based version now.

I changed this ballot suggestion to reflect the specific suggestion. I think this is a valid suggestion and one we've heard before.

As @RW9 mentioned, you can use any external editor -- launched from EG -- to manage more sophisticated edit operations in the meantime.

I added the customer's suggestion into our Feature Request database.

R&D and Product Management will consider this one as a possible future enhancement.

As always, thanks for the continued interest and feedback.

Thanks,

Bill
