That being said, data visualization is typically only part of a job still, I've only rarely seen full time data visualization type jobs.
IMO some knowledge of basic statistics is helpful, like knowing what a mean, a median and a percentile is. Understanding your data and knowing how your visualisation tools work is far more important though.
Its worth remembering that most visualisations are designed to be easily understood by managers, analysts and business specialists. Visualisations that only statisticians can understand would have a very limited audience.
