Hi,

My question involves what programming interface are most people using when they teach SAS programming and statistics courses to students if their university has a SAS Education Analytical Suite license?

I migrated about 6 years ago to using SAS EG as the programming interface, but am wondering if I should switch to SAS studio?  In many of my courses students have never used SAS before and some have never written computer code.   Although I use SAS EG as the interface I do make them write code and not use point and click to write the code.

My goal is to make things as easy for the students as possible to learn BASE SAS coding and how to write code to do repeatable data analysis using SAS and make nice reports using SAS and even though I have used SAS for over 20 years at this point and run SAS myself on a variety of platforms I have trouble knowing what programming interface is best to teach Statistics majors and minors and other students who might land in my courses.  I also want students to be able to run SAS at home.  In the past we distrubuted the software to students for home installation but that was rather cumbersome and time consuming for me.  Now we run SAS on a blade server and the students connect to the windows machines with accounts.  It works fairly well but I did wonder if any schools out there set up a SAS studio server and give accounts out so students can run SAS on a web browser?

I know the free version of SAS is available but since my school pays for the licensed version I want to use it.  I was not sure where to post this in the Communities, so if this is better somewhere else let me know.

Thanks.  Laura

You should seriously consider switching to SAS Studio, as it means all things SAS can be concentrated on one server, and no installation needs to be done on the clients.

If your school's license covers the necessary infrastructure (web applications), so that SAS Studio works, give it a try.

We (business users - insurance) are using EG at the moment, but as soon as Studio becomes available (after migration to 9.4), I want most of my users to switch, because many of them just run a piece of code (periodically), written by someone else.

Thanks Kurt.  That is helpful to know.  I am going to check into the possibility.  Many of my colleagues are still using the Display Manager and I have not been successful in getting them to want to migrate to EG, but I wonder if they might be willing to migrate to Studio if I could figure out how to work with IT to get it set up.  I do love autocomplete with EG and the mouse over help features.

So am I correct that with SAS studio, SAS is installed on a Unix machine and then everyone logs in and runs it through a web browser?

I know there is also a local windows version as it is on my machine but I wondered how it works with multi-user installations.

thanks.

SAS Studio is a web application that needs no installation on the client. All that is needed on the client is a web browser.

This means you only have to maintain a single SAS installation, SAS data can be concentrated in one location (also meaning centralized backup & archive), and collective usage of one license reduces your license costs.

Excuse my ignorance but would the single installation be on a Linux machine?
