I was going to post this as a help request, but I figured it out myself, so others might find my solution helpful.
I had clicked on the Update link in the Start screen, but then the update kept failing. Studio was still working, but it finally quit on me when it reached the 24-hour timeout I had set. (I lost some work. I have now set it to 240 hours!) And then, of course, Studio wouldn't finish starting, and it wouldn't update. So I totally uninstalled Studio and VitrualBox twice, without success. The Start screen was still showing that updates had downloaded and needed to be installed, which struck me as odd, considering I had reinstalled everything. And then the light-bulb moment: cookies! Rather than clear all the cookies in my browser, I found where they were saved and deleted two obvious ones that related to SAS Studio. Success!
