PROC SQL is a procedure where as MERGE is a data step.

PROC SQL takes longer time to run than MERGE when performing joins on large data sets.

PROC SQL provides other potential advantages for communicating outside the SAS as SQL query is the standard method for specifying data requests from one database to another.

PROC SQL is particularly appealing because of its simplicity and readability.
