%sysfunc to get variable attributes

Help!  I'm drawing a blank when I know I've done this about 5 years ago.

How can I use %sysfunc to call functions to get attributes of a data step variable?  Something like opening the data set, locating the variable by number, then retrieving whether it is character or numeric?  Thanks in advance!
