It does work, you are not reading correctly as you missed out the informat in the input statement

 

data have;
input h : $9. @@;
age=substr(h,anydigit(h));
gender=substr(h,anydigit(h)-1,1);
name=substr(h,1,anydigit(h)-2);
datalines;
raviM26 rajeshM28 shaliniF5
