reading data from merged cells

I have a data in the following format in excel spreadsheet.
Actually the PatientID treatment and Test are given in merged cells.
For example for screening(value is 10) the data is available in the next row.
but PatientID treatment and test are common for first and second rows.


Patient--Treatment--Test--Screening---Day1---Day2--Day3--Day5

1---------------X------------A---------------------- 20-------20-------30-------40
----------------------------------------10

How can I make a dataset with this kind of data in such a way that
for each patient all data should be available in one row.

there are a variety of tedious but possible ways to read in such abnormally presented data, but my gut feeling is that you will be much better off if you can clean up the data from your source Excel spreadsheet to eliminate this kind of abnormality.
