Hi ,
I want to write a nested if condition,
data a;
set b;
If name= genny then do;
if age <= 4 then class=1;
if age <= 5 then class=2;
if age <= 6 then class=3;
end;
else if name= kennedy then do;
if age <= 4 then class=1;
if age <= 5 then class=2;
if age <= 6 then class=3;
end;
else
run;
please suggest a correct syntax.

If name= 'genny' then do; *Note that character comparison are case sensitive; if age <= 4 then class = 1; else if age <= 5 then class = 2; else if age <= 6 then class = 3; end; else if name = 'kennedy' then do; if age <= 4 then class=1; else if age <= 5 then class=2; else if age <= 6 then class=3; end; else class=4;
This is the correct syntax.
1. Put text comparisons in quotes. Note that those are case sensitive, e.g. Genny, genny, GENNY are all different values.
2. Change your conditions from IF to ELSE IF otherwise only the last condition would be true for each set of IF statements, since a 4 year old is less than 6 as well as less than 4.
3. Add a last clause to account for cases that are not coded. Not necessarily needed.
