* in Proc Print

What does * in proc print mean.  I’m trying to diagnose an issue where I have a column defined as both character and numeric and I feel understanding what * means might help.

One possibility:  A variable is too large to fit into its preassigned format.  For example, a variable has a format of 2. but its actual value is 100.
