Hello there,

 

I am importing a csv file but my variables converted into char variable. Please advise what will be the best way to import data from excel to get the data as numeric variables. Thanks Sara

Do NOT (I repeat: NOT) inspect a csv file with Excel. You will see what Excel thinks about the data, not what is really in there.

Open the csv file with a text editor, and copy/paste a few lines into a window opened with the </> button. Then we can show you how to read the data with a data step.

proc import relies on making guesses about the data; by writing the data step yourself, you take control.

Proc Import reads the data into character variables because your source strings are in double quotes. If you want to use Proc Import then you need to remove the quoting from all columns which should become numeric. Below code implements such pre-processing of your source data.

A more selective way to remove the quotes is to do it value by value. 

Then any values that actually need the quotes (because they contain quotes or delimiters) will keep their quotes.

I had also noticed this behavior recently for the first time.  When PROC IMPORT sees that every value in a "column" of a CSV file has quotes around it then it makes the resulting variable as character, even if the values are all valid numbers.

 

Is this documented any where?

Has anyone seen any option to turn off this behavior?  It would be better not to have to resort to some type of pro-processing to remove the quotes.

Why bother to use proc import on a csv file, anyway? In the time it takes to clean the data of one file after the import, one can write several data steps to read several external files without all the hassle.
